Pick Up Some Book Bargains at a Holiday Book Sale on Saturday

Rock Island, IL: If you have booklovers on your holiday list, here's a chance to pick up some bargains. The Rock Island Library will offer a holiday book sale on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm within the used bookstore of the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street.

Sale attendees can fill a new Rock Island Library book bag with any combination of books for just $10 or get half price "Buy One Get One" deals on smaller quantities of books.

Sale prices will be honored at the 30/31 Branch only, and for one day only. Extra library bags - perfect for holiday gift giving - will be available for $3 for one or two for $5.

December Events for Teens and Adults at Rock Island Libraries

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Library will offer the following free events for teens and adults in December:

Teen Events, Ages 12 to 18

Doctor Who "weeping angel" craft - Thursday, Dec. 3, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street. Teens ages 12 to 18 can make creepy weeping angel figures inspired by the Doctor Who BBC television series. In the series, the stone weeping angels can only move when you're not looking at them, so whatever you do . . .don't blink!

Teen Gaming Night - Thursday, Dec. 10, from 5:45 pm to 7:30 pm, Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens can play video games on the library's over-sized projection screen. Xbox 360, Wii and board games will be available, along with snacks.

Doctor Who Party - Thursday, Dec. 17, 6:00 to 7:30 pm, Main Library, 401 19th Street. The library's annual Doctor Who party features snacks fit for a Time Lord, Doctor Who trivia and prizes, crafts and a showing of a (non-BBC) Doctor Who movie.

Adults -

Independent Movie Night - Thursday, Dec. 3, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. The library's monthly Independent Movie Nights return Dec. 3, with the showing of a French movie about a Parisian man who decides that moving to Israel might turn his dead-end life around. Includes free popcorn and discussion. Independent films are not rated. Independent Movie nights are offered on the first Thursday of each month.

Alpha Book Club - Monday, Dec. 7, 3:00 to 4:00 pm, Rock Island Main Library. Book discussion of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, by Gabrielle Zevin. If you've read the book, show up and add your thoughts to the discussion. Alpha Book club meets on the first Monday of each month.

Pinterest Craft Night - Thursday, Dec. 17, 6:00 pm, Rock Island 30/31 Branch. Adult and teen participants will make a holiday wreath out of clothes pins and Washi craft tape. Rock Island, IL: Coloring for adults is a Big Thing right now, with enthusiasts praising its positive influence on calming anxiety, focusing on the moment, and relaxation.

If holiday shopping rush already has you tied in knots, take time for a free Coloring for Adults program at the Rock Island Main Library on Monday, Nov. 30. Relax and create from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Main Library's Community Room at 401 19th Street. The library will provide a variety of coloring sheets, art supplies, cocoa, tea and a light snack. The event is for adults ages 18 and up and is free.

Rock Island, IL: Teens and adults will find plenty of events at the Rock Island Public Library next week. Teens ages 12 to 18 who are fans of the Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins and the movie franchise based on the books can take part in a free Mockingjay party at the Main Library on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The event will show the first installment of the Hunger Games series finale before the 2nd portion is released next Friday. Teens can catch up on the plot, play for prizes in a Hunger Games scavenger hunt, and enjoy snacks. The event is from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.

On Thursday, the library screens a different type of cinema with a Teen Anime Night. The event celebrates the art of Japanese animation with anime showings from the library's subscription to Crunchyroll, lessons in writing Japanese characters and Japanese snacks. The event is Thursday, Nov. 19, 6:00 to 7:30 pm, also at the Main Library. Both teen events are for ages 12 to 18.

Adults can catch a rescheduled presentation next Tuesday on the explosive impact of Albert Einstein's 1915 Theory of Relativity as part of an extended Frieze Lecture series with co-partner Augustana College. Dr. Cecilia Vogel, Augustana College physics department, will discuss the reception to Einstein's theory, how it forever changed our perception of the universe, and new or competing theories that have also arisen. The free presentation takes place at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room.

A newly added event next Wednesday is a presentation from Dr. Art Pitz on Quad City Jewish Heritage. Offered in cooperation with the Putnam Museum and Science Center's exhibit of the same name, the free program will be offered from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room. Participants can also view a traveling exhibit on "A Welcome Place: Quad City Jewish Heritage" in the library's art gallery space next to the Community Room.

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Main Library location at 401 19th Street will close at noon on Thursday, Nov. 12 in order to set-up for a Rock Island Public Library Foundation fundraising event. Branch locations will be open for library business. The 30/31 Branch at 3059 30th Street is open until 8:00 pm on Thursday. The Southwest Branch at 9010 Ridgewood Road is open until 5:30 pm on Thursday.

All locations of the Rock Island Public Library will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Public Library Foundation will celebrate the Great American novel with a foodie twist with their Food for Thought "American Classics" fundraiser at the Rock Island Main Library next week. To do that, the Rock Island Library's Main location will close to the public at noon on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Food for Thought guests will get the Main Library to themselves on Thursday from  5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, to enjoy a night of socializing and dining at stations from 10 chefs, beverage providers, and restaurants:

The Rock Island Public Library Foundation hosts the annual event to raise funds for books and literacy, as well as awareness of the Foundation's role in enabling special projects that fall outside of the library's tax-supported budget. Rock Island, IL: The Nov. 3 Frieze Lecture at the Rock Island Library will consider the events surrounding the Feb. 8, 1915 release of the controversial film Birth of a Nation.

 

Contemporary reaction included large crowds, widespread protests, and a campaign by the NAACP to ban the film. Augustana College professor of political science Dr. Christopher Whitt will discuss some of those events, and how racism in entertainment affects politics. The free lecture takes place at 2:00 pm at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, Rock Island.

The annual Frieze Lecture partnership features free public library talks by Augustana College professors (without tests or grades) and discussions afterward over coffee and cookies. The series is named after the decorative architectural frieze on the exterior of the Main Library.

All presentations begin at 2:00 pm, in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. Additional presentations in this year's "1915: A Landmark Year" lecture series include a Nov. 10 talk by Farah Marklevits on the legacy of two 1915 poems: Robert Frost's Road Not Taken and TS Eliot's Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, as well as a rescheduled lecture by Dr. Cecilia Vogel on Nov. 17 on Albert Einstein's 1915 Theory of Relativity.

Rock Island, IL: The front steps at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 29 and Friday, Oct. 30, for the installation of hand-railings. While the steps are closed for work, access the library via the South (Ground Floor) entrance.

The railing installation is one of the last remaining tasks in the library's stone restoration project.

Rock Island, IL: October goes out with a shamble at the Rock Island Library with a Teen Zombie Party on Thurs, Oct. 29 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, at the Main Library location, 401 19th Street, Rock Island.

Ghoulish fun is on the menu, with opportunities for teens to  enjoy brainy snacks, watch your favorite undead citizens in a zombie movie, and try out your own zombie look with horrifying makeup. The Teen Zombie Party is for ages 12 to 18 and does not require registration.

Dr. Lisa Seidlitz, Augustana College associate professor of world languages, will speak at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 27 at the Rock Island Main Library on the literary impact of The Metamorphosis. which was first published in a literary magazine in October 1915. Though largely unknown during his lifetime, Kafka is regarded as one of the influential authors of the 20th century.
