Rock Island, IL: The annual Frieze Lectures partnership between Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College looks back 100 years ago to 1915, and the famous and infamous products of a most notable year.

On four Tuesdays, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 10, Augustana College guest lecturers will consider "1915 - A Landmark Year," and events ranging from the development of Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the publishing of Franz Kafka's ground-breaking novel The Metamorphosis, the release of DW Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, and of poems by Robert Frost and TS Eliot that are still read today. All of these events had their roots in 1915, and their effects still echo through our culture today, for both good and ill.

The annual partnership features four lectures by Augustana College professors (without tests or grades) and  fascinating discussions afterward over coffee and cookies at the Rock Island Public Library. All presentations begin at 2:00 pm, in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. This year's Frieze Lectures schedule:

October 20: Dr. Cecilia Vogel, professor of physics, on how the publishing of Einstein's Theory of Relativity in 1915 revolutionized our thinking about the universe.

October 27: Dr. Lisa Seidlitz, associate professor of world languages, on the literary impact of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, 100 years later.

November 3: Dr. Christopher Whitt, associate professor of political science, on events surrounding the 1915 release of DW Griffith's controversial Birth of a Nation and how racism in entertainment shapes politics.

November 10: Farah Marklevits, adjunct instructor in English, on the literary legacy of two great poems first published in 1915: Robert Frost's Road Not Taken and TS Eliot's Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock.

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Library will host a new abstract art exhibit by Rock Island artist Elaine Shepherd Rexdale during October at the Main Library location.

Her exhibit, I Met a wo(Man) Who Wasn't There, is inspired by the poem Antigonish by Hughes Mearns. "Yesterday, upon the stair/I met a man who wasn't there./He wasn't there again today,/I wish, I wish he'd go away/When I came home last night at three,/The man was waiting there for me/But when I looked around the hall, I couldn't see him there at all! . . . "

Elaine Rexdale has worked in the educational field for her entire adult life. Her chosen career took her to Illinois, Louisiana and New York, before returning to make Rock Island her home. Inspiration comes from a life-long hobby of people watching, and the worlds of art and music. Her abstract acrylic paintings use bold strokes and bright colors to convey excitement and energy.

"For me, the visually most interesting is not in perfection, but imperfection," says Rexdale.  "I want viewers to experience the beauty of movement, design, and color, even if the message I'm attempting to convey is not immediately recognized,"

Rexdale regularly exhibits at Midcoast Fine Arts and Geneseo Art League, and recently completed a showing at Galesburg Civic Art Center. Her exhibit will be on display in the Rock Island Main Library's 2nd floor gallery space, 401 19th Street, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 31 during the day and in the evening during library programs.

Rock Island, IL: Not every book is right for every reader, but we should have the right to think and decide for ourselves. That's the idea behind Banned Books Week, Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, 2015, and the reason for a public "read-in" on Sept. 29 at the Rock Island Main Library.

Refreshments start at 5:30 pm with guest readings starting at 6:00 pm. Drawings will also be held for Banned Books Week t-shirts, buttons and other giveaways.

This Banned Books Week event celebrates our freedom of speech and our freedom to choose what we read, listen to, or view.

The event is sponsored by the Rock Island Public Library and Midwest Writing Center. The event is free and open to the public.
