Rock Island, IL: Summer reading is going out in a super way with eight events next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at various locations of the Rock Island Public Library.

Thursday starts with a bang, with two performances of the Mad Mixtures Science and Nature Show. Free shows will be offered July 16 at 10:00 am at the Main Library, 401 19th Street, and at 1:00 pm at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. Presented by Jason Dornbush, outreach coordinator of  the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium in Waterloo, the Mad Mixtures show is the best of the center's Super Cold, Combustion, Snakes Alive, and Kitchen Science presentations. With chances to pet a live python to hands-on science experiments involving liquid nitrogen, flash powder and paper, and everyday materials found in your kitchen, Mad Mixtures offers learning fun for students of all ages.

On Thursday night, teens ages 12 to 18 can try their hand at Melted Crayon Art, with a free craft class offered at 6:00 pm at the Rock Island 30/31 Branch, 3059 30th Street. Teens will create unique works of art using melted crayons, so participants should wear old clothing. Creativity is messy! No RSVPs are required for the teens-only event.

Thursday also offers an opportunity for adults to get a little help figuring out to check out free eBooks on their tablets, computers and eReader devices. The library will offer a free class on downloading OverDrive eBooks at 6:00 pm on July 16 at the downtown Main Library, 401 19th Street.  Participants who want to try downloading eBooks should bring their device and library card along.

Friday marks a number of events for children at the Main Library, including a toddler storytime on "Heroes at School" at 10:30 am, and the final Read with Rover  time at 11:00 am. Both events are in the library's Children's Room. Read with Rover brings in therapy dogs from the QC Canine Assistance Network, who provide a warm, non-judgmental audience for kids'  reading practice. Read with Rover is open to kids of all ages.

At 12:30 pm, the library will hold a superheroes costume parade to provide kids with one last chance to wear their capes and masks. The parade will be immediately followed at 1:00 pm by a free family movie featuring a certain superhero who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Both events are in the Community Room of the Main Library.

The superhero theme wraps up with a superhero treat box family craft on Saturday at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. The craft starts at 10 am, and reservations are required. Entries for library's Every Hero Has a Story contests for children and Escape the Ordinary teen and adult reading contests are due by 5:00 pm, Saturday, July 18. Grand prizes will be drawn following the close of the program, with winners notified by phone or email.

Rock Island, IL: Teens with a taste for Japanese-style animation, called anime, can explore their interests next Tuesday with a free Teen Anime Night from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Rock Island Library.

The free event for ages 12 to 18 will be held at the Main Library building downtown, 401 19th Street.

Activities at the July 14 event include munching on Japanese snacks, learning how to write Japanese characters, and watching selections from Crunchyroll, a popular anime-streaming website. Many anime titles are based on Japanese comic books known as manga, including Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist and Tokyo Ghoul.

Rock Island, IL: Parents have two more chances to help kids improve their reading superpowers with final summer Read with Rover programs at the Rock Island Public Library.

Read with Rover will be offered at revised times of 11:00 am to noon on Wednesday, July 8 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road, and on Friday. July 17 in the Main Library Children's Room, 401 19th Street. The learning events bring in certified therapy dogs from the QC Canine Assistance Network (QC CAN) so children can practice reading aloud before a welcoming, non-judgmental audience.

Reading to a therapy dog may be especially useful for reluctant readers and children in the 8 to 12-year-old age range, who have fewer opportunities to read aloud. From increasing vocabulary to attention span, reading aloud is one of the single most important ways to improve a child's reading level. The events are open to children in grades K-6 or equivalent ages.

Rock Island, IL: Juggler, stilt-walker and balloon-twister Jason Kollum kicks off his "See the Show, Become a Pro" tour on Monday, July 6 at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.

The Niles, Illinois entertainer appeared to rave reviews in Rock Island last year. His hour-long interactive show includes a super-sized blend of juggling everything from audience member's shoes to more traditional balls, rings, and clubs, and balancing blocks, wine glasses and spinning platters, often while balancing himself in the bargain. In addition to helping with some of the more involved stunts, audience members will get a chance to learn juggling and balancing skills in the "become a pro" workshop after the show.Kollum appears at 10:00 am on July 6 in the Rock Island Library's second-floor Community Room. The show is free and open to the public.

Jeanie B! Music & Dance Show - 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Thursday, June 18, Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. Jeanie B! is a Chicago-based singer, songwriter and pre-school music teacher who has won acclaim for her fun, entertaining and educational kids music. Her "heroes" show puts a spotlight on real-life heroes with a playful and interactive look at the different kinds of heroes in our lives. Audiences will help Jeanie write a superhero song, and kids will get their creative juices flowing while singing, playing, and saying thank you for heroes.

Jeanie B! is the creator of several award-winning CD music releases. Titles include an upcoming release, I Love Music, along with Sugar Buzz (2011), Joy (2008), Mommy Knows Best (2006) and I'm a Kid (2005). When not performing at one of more than 150 concerts per year, she teaches music to pre-school and special needs children at five Chicagoland area schools.

Activities are free and open to the public, and are part of the Every Hero Has a Story and Escape the Ordinary summer education offered until July 18. The reading incentive contests and more than 60 free events are designed to help keep children, teens and adults active, productive and learning over the summer. Rock Island, IL: Free public programs at the Rock Island Library next week will allow guests to "see" the western frontier of Rock Island through the eyes of a  female traveler and get a quick verbal estimate on the worth of family treasures.

On Tuesday, June 16, local historian Gayle Rein will portray 19th Century author and social reformer Catharine Maria Sedgwick, one of the original Grand Excursion riders. "The June 1854 Grand Excursion was a festive affair that carried hundreds of dignitaries on a combination rail and steamboat ride from Chicago to Rock Island, Illinois then on to St. Paul in Minnesota Territory," according to Grand Excursions on the Upper Mississippi River, edited by Curtis C. Roseman and Elizabeth M. Roseman (University of Iowa Press, 2004.)

In Catharine Maria Sedgwick Rides the Train to Rock Island, Rein presents Catharine's observations of her trip to the western frontier of Rock Island and the beauty of the Mississippi River. The free event begins at 6:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.

On Thursday, June 18, residents can find out how much some of their family treasures may be worth with an Antique Appraisal Fair event. Certified Appraiser Terri Applegate, of LeClaire Antiques & Appraisals, will be available to offer free verbal appraisals of up to four items per person. Items must be able to be carried by hand. Assistance will not be available with large or bulky items. The free event takes place from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the Main Library Community Room.

Wheels on the Bus Will Take Children to Moline & Rock Island Library Summer Programs

Moline/Rock Island, IL: A summer partnership with Metro will again allow children to travel for free to summer programs at the Moline and Rock Island Public Libraries just by showing a valid library card.

The Moline and Rock Island Public Libraries have partnered with Metro to allow children from ages 4 to 12 to use a valid library card as their fare when traveling to and from several library locations between May 30 to August 1.

Children must be accompanied by a paying adult, and will have their fares waived when traveling to and from the library branches located at 3210 41st Street, Moline; 401 19th Street, Rock Island; and 3059 30th Street, Rock Island. Riders must show a valid library card from the Moline, Rock Island, East Moline or Silvis Libraries to claim the fare waiver.

The summer reading theme for both libraries is "Every Hero Has a Story." The Rock Island program runs from May 30 to July 18 and includes a free summer kickoff carnival on May 30. The Moline program runs from June 6 to August 1.

Learn to Knit class -- 6:30 pm, Monday, June 1, 8 and 15, Main Library. Have you been waiting to learn how to knit? Catherine Maria Sedgwick was a 19th century author and social reformer from Massachusetts. In June 1854, she accompanied the "Grand Excursion" on a train to Rock Island and a steamboat trip to St. Paul. In this local history presentation, historian Gayle Rein brings Catharine Sedgwick to life. Listen as Catharine tells about her trip to what was then the western frontier and shares her observations about the beauty of the Mississippi River with the politicians, artists, and other dignitaries on the trip.

Antique Appraisal Fair -- 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm, Thurs, June 18, Main Library Community Room. Is it treasure or a trinket? Terri Applegate, of LeClaire Antiques & Appraisals will help you evaluate your pieces. Participants may bring up to four items in for appraisal at this Antiques Roadshow-type event. Items must be carried by hand. Assistance will be not be available with transporting large items in or out of the library. Teens and adults.

Independent Movie Nights -- first Thursday of each month, Main Library Community Room. Join fellow film fans for free monthly showing of an independent movie, followed by discussion. Movies are not rated. The June 4 movie starts at 6:00 pm and features the story of a middle-class family living in Singapore during the Asian financial crisis of 1997, and the relationships each family member forms with the Filipino nanny. Mandarin, with subtitles. The July 2 movie also starts at 6:00 pm, and features the tale of 33-year-old Arman, whose attempts to build a lasting connection with the lovely Amelie over two autumns and three winters meet with varying degrees of success. Reveal Your Secret Identity & Win with a Superhero Costume Contest at Rock Island Library

Rock Island, IL: Reading will be everyone's superpower this summer at the Rock Island Library, and if you already have a superhero secret identity, here's your chance to win. The library will host a superhero costume contest for children, teens, and adults as part of its Super-Powered Summer Kickoff on Saturday, May 30.

The Summer Reading kickoff takes place in the parking lot of the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. To participate in the free costume contest, check in at the event's registration table and line up no later than 11:45 am. Families may compete as a superhero team, with prizes available in the children, teen, adult and family categories. There's no charge to enter the costume contest.

Summer reading registration and a variety of special events will be offered at the library from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, including:

  • A superhero training camp testing your feats of strength and skill by The Speed Attic and Quad City Wolfpack football players.
  • Meet and greet members of the Rock Island Police and Fire Departments, and learn about what they do for the community.
  • Free comics while they last from the Mellow Blue Planet and The ComiQ Rack stores.
  • Supersized bounce house and slide, face painting by Chuck Knudsen, balloon figures by Rick Eugene, superhero selfies, caped caricatures by Draw Me Bill and kids' games ranging from super-villain bowling to a parachute POWer throw.
  • Free hot dogs, chips and water, courtesy of sponsor Sedona Technologies.
  • Kona Ice will be available for sale, with proceeds benefitting the library.

Scheduled events at the free kickoff include a drill team performance by Metro Youth at 11 am, and music by the 38th Street Birds band at 1:30 pm in the Main Library Community Room. Rock Islanders John and Kelli Stanford are the dynamic duo behind 38th Street Birds, playing fun music for parents and kids that includes folk pop, children's music and comic tunes.

All events are free and open to the public, with most activities offered inside in event of rain. Due to the supersized nature of this event, the library's 30/31 and Southwest Branches will be closed on Saturday, May 30 so branch staff can assist with the kickoff.
