CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (February 7, 2025) — The African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) is pleased to announce that after a thorough and thoughtful selection process, Jacqueline Hunter has been chosen as the new Executive Director.

Hunter will begin her position on Monday, March 3.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (December 23, 2024) — The African American Museum of Iowa and WIN (Women in NAACP) are partnering to host a Kwanzaa celebration on Saturday, December 28, 12-3PM.

This meaningful celebration of Kwanzaa will honor African American heritage, culture, and unity. The event will include cultural performances and interactive activities for all ages, as well as food, local artisans, and opportunities for learning and reflection.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (September 5, 2024) — The African American Museum of Iowa unveil a new exhibit, Racist Things: Hateful Imagery in the American Home. This exhibit will thoughtfully consider the impact of post-Civil War society and the culture surrounding Jim Crow laws as the basis of the popularity of dehumanizing Black imagery.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (August 29, 2024) — The Board of Directors of the African American Museum of Iowa announces that treasured leader, LaNisha Cassell, will be starting a new journey. After nearly nine years of dedicated service to the Museum and the community, Cassell will be pursuing an exciting new career opportunity out of state. Her last day with the Museum will be October 7, 2024, following their annual History Makers Gala.

The event will highlight the achievements of honorees Dr Wilfred Johnson (Waterloo), Jo Lavera and Phillip E Jones (Iowa City), Emma Squires (Cedar Rapids), James L Tillman Sr (Sioux City), and Mary L Wells (Des Moines).

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (October 13, 2023) — The African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI), in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMC), is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibit, “Power and Impact: A Survey of 21st Century Black Visual Arts in Iowa.” “Power and Impact” will be on display at the CRMA October 28, 2023–March 31, 2024.
