CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (September 20, 2022) — The African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) is unveiling a new exhibit, Suspended: Systemic Oppression in Our Schools, on Friday, October 14. This original exhibit examines the role public schools play in funneling students into the prison system. Elements of the criminal justice system have entered public schools around the country, resulting in zero-tolerance policies and student policing that disproportionately affect children of color.

The event will highlight the achievements of honorees Sean Baylor (Cedar Rapids), Diana Henry (Iowa City), Pastor Chassidi Martin (Waterloo), Fred Seay (Keokuk), and Ross Wilburn (Ames). History Makers were nominated by their peers and selected by a Museum committee based on their professional and community impact as leaders.
