Sarah Pomeroy helped bring about a revolutionary turn of perspective in which the old adage,  "history is written by and about men,"  no longer holds true.  We will revisit her classic - Goddesses , Whores, Wives, and Slaves - with supplemental material on some dynastic mothers, to see how women lived in ancient Greece and Rome.
Presenter Michael Rosenthal is an Independent Scholar and has completed extensive graduate work in
theology, philosophy and psychology at the St. Paul Seminary and the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University.

"What to eat or not to eat? That is the question ....." (apologies to Shakespere's Hamlet)

Moline and Rock Island were on the cover article of the Business Day section of last weekend's New York Times featuring the push against obesity, a national affliction, now growing worldwide.
 
The excellent article covers the work of area dietitians Dawn Blocklinger in the Moline Hy-Vee and Chrissy Watters in the Rock Island Hy-Vee showing clients how to shop for foood and teaching them what to eat.
The rest of our parody, with due appologies to Shakespere, and a copy of the article will be available for you to take home.
Open Discussion on the methods used, effective or otherwise, in attempts to stem the growing problem.

Mental Disorders and DSM IV

The modern view of mental disorder has evolved greatly over the last
century. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders (DSM)
is on its fourth revision, and it is the main guide that medical
professionals use in communicating information about mental illness. This
discussion will cover a brief history of the document, a survey of the
major controversies involving it, and the issues surrounding its future.

Charles has his engineering degree from the University of Iowa and is a published author with books written in the technical field of computer science. Charles is with Info Systems at Alcoa and is a resident of Rock Island.

Richard learnt the process from a Japanese artist : Toshika Takasu, who was touring local and major Universities in the US.
All the design is pottery. $ 125.00
About Richard:
Specialist in wheel thrown pottery of the artistic side as opposed to functional pottery.
With a career as an Accountant, Comptroller and Budget director of the Industrial Division with Deere and Company, he is a member of the Budget Executive Institute and National Accounting Association as well as  trained at Augustana's Fine Art Department, and seminars at various major Universities and workshops with visiting potters, Richard's work has been honored and sold across the US and in many foreign countries.
Richard's love of Art has been with him all his life. His creativity expressed In his art brings Fine Art to your daily life, as sculpture to accent your garden and your home both indoors and outdoors. All creations are one-of-a-kind.
As Augustana he developed an Ash-glaze, named after him as Rich's Ash-Glaze which is still being used at the college.
Richard continues to create pottery as Fine Art.

" Energy in Ancient Theories and its Modern Day Applications" by Krystal Hamilton Case. I.S.E.

" Energy in Ancient Theories and its Modern Day Applications" 
by
Krystal Hamilton Case will speak about the concept of energy in ancient
theories, modern day applications, and her own experiences with energy awareness
and healing.

Licensed as a massage therapist since 2006, Krystal has worked in a number of
settings from the 5 star hotels of Chicago, to fitness centers, and alternative
therapy centers as well as maintaining her own business throughout the years.
She is a certified reflexologist and has taken classes in Thai massage,
therapeutic Thai flying, stone massage, asian cupping, fire cupping, Quantum
Touch, Thai herbal compress massage and other healing modalities. She has taught
at a school for massage therapy: basic anatomy, physiology, and pathology (for
massage therapists) as well as Swedish massage, Eastern healing theories, and
spa techniques.

In 2007 Krystal studied Shjanta yoga for three months in the beautiful mountains
of Kentucky with Shjaway Deboer at Eartheart Mountain Yoga Community. Shjanta
yoga blends hatha and raja yoga with Buddhist and Taoist meditation techniques,
Makka-Ho energy meridian stretches, Tibetan Rights, Tai-chi, as well as diet and
internal cleansing.

In 2011 Krystal completed levels 1-4 in Touch for Health (TFH) Kinesiology. This
year,2012, she completed her instructor certification and was elected to the
Board of Directors for TFH Kinesiology in the United States. She is working with
a group of five TFH Kinesiology instructors across the United States to empower
individuals and families to become their own primary healthcare providers.

Monica Lacovitch will be addressing the effects of depression and mental illness on friends and family.
Dealing with the stigma.
It's never easy to see someone you love in so much pain when there is nothing you can do to make them happy, she says. How do you handle someone who is having suicidal thoughts that is close to you?
This is the beginning of  writing an inspirational autobiography.  Monica says:  " I am a whole five pages in!!  My goal is to help people to understand and to give hope to those who are having a hard time.  I feel like I have finally found my purpose"
Monica R. Lacovitch is a Legal Assistant to attorneys Terry Stratton, Brent Bogen and Matthew Hays at Katz, Huntoon, & Fieweger, P.C. Moline, Illinois. Brought up in Kentucky, Monica is the Former Ms. Iowa American Coed 2011, Former Miss Midwest Glamorous Miss 2010, Division Supreme Beauty Winner America's U.S. Beauties 2011, and Former Miss Kentucky International 2009 among others.  Since turning 30 she has officially decided to retire from competing in pageants but still has a pageant for coaching and judging the competitions.  She now focuses her spare time as an up and coming promotional and print model.

Independent Scholars' Evenings presentation is by Glorie Iaccarino.

Presenting the benefits of Public Art and the Art of Giving with the purpose to
expose, engage, educate and enlighten public. 
She will be 
Discussing views on the value of art metaphorically and financially. Also,
proposing the idea that because it is "free" it does not have a lesser value. 
During the evening, she will be Introducing the PaperGirl project from Berlin,
Germany. This movement has grown worldwide and soon will be our first local
event Papergirl Quad Cities.

About the Presenter:

Glorie Iaccarino is a Quad Cities area artist and educator who has spent over
twenty years advocating, creating, and promoting art as way to educate,
enlighten and entertain the community. She currently works as a facilitator with
the Eco Arts Council of the Quad Cities and formerly was the Director of The
Quad City Girl Power! Club. She has provided programs and events such as
"Celebration of Woman", "The Mobile Art Clinic", and served as a contributing
editor with an Eco page with Families First Magazine and as co-host educator
with the "Art with Mr. I" art lesson series on WQPT. From public school
classrooms, local libraries and area non-profit youth serving organizations, Ms.
Iaccarino shares her love, passion, and respect for art as a way of living
promoting the philosophy that there is "Art from Life and Life from Art".
