East West Riverfest Starts Next Week!

Reading is So Delicious for Kids

 

The Reading is So Delicious summer reading club offers: A Read-to-Me club log for ages two to five, the I'm a Reader book club for ages six to eight, and the Ravenous Reader log for ages nine to 11. With each log, kids earn prizes for reaching age-appropriate reading goals at three levels, and an extra chance to win special prize baskets.  Fill out an ice cream cone iwth your name on it to be added to our summer reading wall! Part 4 of the Arab-Israeli Series is May 29

Professor and historian Dr. Art Pitz will continue his discussions of the Middle East on May 29 at the Rock Island Main Library. This is the last lecture in the four-part series at the Moline and Rock Island Libraries. Tuesday's topic is: "Can Israel Negotiate with any Palestinian Government?"

 

The free presentation is at 6:00 pm. No registration is required.

 

The 2012 series is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities, the Rock Island Public Library Foundation, and the Friends of the Moline Public Library.

The library is "serving up" food-themed reading contests and more than 103 events for children, teens and adults. Activities begin Monday, June 4, with reading logs and entries due back to the library by Friday, July 27.

Reading is So Delicious for Kids

 

The delicious selection of things for kids to do this summer at the library includes "all-you-can-eat" reading programs that reward entrants as they read. The Reading is So Delicious summer reading club offers reading logs for three age groups: A Read-to-Me club log for ages two to five, the I'm a Reader book club for ages six to eight, and the Ravenous Reader log for ages nine to 11. With each contest, children earn prizes for reaching age-appropriate reading goals at three levels, and an extra chance to win a Movie, Olympic or Outdoor Fun prize basket. Forms will be available at all Rock Island Libraries starting June 4.

 

Families can also stretch their summer fun budget with free events from June 4 through August 22. Events are free and open to any member of the public, regardless of library card status or participation in the reading clubs. The library offers both weekly events, including storytimes, "book-tastings," and a math munch program with Elizabeth.

Special events and performers include two Friday Fest movies (Ratatouille and Chicken Run) and performances by Niabi Zoo, award-winning ventriloquist Kevin Horner, a birthday bash for library mascot Max Reader Mouse, magician Rick Eugene, Mad Science demos, the Reading is So Delicious puppet show with Rob "Mr. E" Erdmann, and the Incredible Bats show, featuring live fruit bats and education from Daniel and Sharon Peterson, of IncredibleBats.com.

Teens: Feed your Mind - READ!

Feed Your Mind- READ is the Teen Summer Reading club theme. Readers ages 12 to 18 turn in a reading card when they complete at least six hours of reading, or a program card for attending any one of 20 events. Participants can enter multiple times, and earn more chances to win books, DVDs, gift cards, or the grand prize, an Amazon Kindle® eReader. Teens can also earn gift cards for attending Iron Chef or Food Jeopardy game programs. Entry boxes and cards will be available at the June 4 Food Myths Kickoff (5:00 to 6:30 pm, Main Library), and at all Rock Island Library locations.

 

The more than 20 teen events this summer include movie and food craft events, pioneer cooking demos, cupcake and cookie decorating, pizza and international food tastings, Iron Chef and chocolate and food jeopardy contests, and non-food tie-dying and gaming nights. Books are Brain Food for Adults

Adults 18 and up also have chances to win and take advantage of more free events, with the Books Are Brain Food reading club. The ample list of adult programs this summer include the Stephen Foster music program on June 5,  food and fitness education, OverDrive demos, monthly independent movies, four "recipe club" cooking demos and recipe swaps, and a series of three "dinner and a movie" events, where participants can bring in carry-out food or a picnic while enjoying a food-related movie.

 

To enter the reading contest, adults fill out an entry form for every book they read between June 4 and July 27. Print, audiobook and eReader formats all qualify. Entry forms and boxes will be available at all Rock Island locations. Top prize is a new Sony® eReader. Entry deadline is July 27, with prizes drawn after Aug. 3.

Event Helps Preserve County History

image of an 1871 private library cardJust in time for National Historic Preservation Month, the Rock Island County Historical Society (RICHS) is offering a special history day from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 10 at the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.

 

Society representatives are seeking maps, books, letters, personal papers, photographs, films, journals and manuscripts, historical objects, paintings, diaries, historic records, vintage brochures, pamphlets and postcards, newspapers and other publications, yearbooks, and memorabilia. Items may be donated outright, or scanned for archiving by the Society.

 

A special workshop on preserving family treasures will be offered at 2:30 and 3:30 pm.

 

Society members will also record oral histories. Veterans are encouraged to share their stories. No registration is required for the drop-in event.

How DO you get those photos off the camera?

couple on trip taking photoLearn the basics of using your point-and-shoot digital camera at special "Senior Series" class on Tuesday, May 22, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street.

 

Digital Camera 101 is a beginning "nuts-and-bolts" class for those new to digital photography. Led by instructor Dee Oberle, of Gypsy Chicks Photography, the class will teach basic terms, taking and deleting photos, the meaning of those little pictures on the dial, and how to get your images off the memory card and into print.

 

This is a hands-on class, so enrollment is limited. Registration is required. To sign up, leave a message at 309-732-7303 or email Library Public Relations.

 

What to bring: Your digital point-and-shoot camera with charged batteries and memory card, and the camera manual (if you have one.)

 

This class is not for experienced camera users or for owners of digital SLR cameras with interchangeable lenses.

Libraries Host Middle-Eastern Discussion Series

arches at mosqueProfessor and historian Dr. Art Pitz will continue his discussions of the Middle East in presentations on "The Arab-Israeli Conflict" at the Moline and Rock Island Public Libraries.  This year's series includes new topics generated from Dr. Pitz's travels to Israel and the Palestinian territories. In 2010, he spent a month in the Middle East, where he was briefed by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, traveled to southern Israel near Gaza, and visited the West Bank and a Palestinian refugee camp.

Lincoln Program is this Friday!

antique photo of Eddie LincolnJust a reminder that our rescheduled program about the family life of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln is this Friday, April 20, at 2:00 pm in the Rock Island Main Library, Community Room.

Civil War scholar Tom Emery, of Carlinville, IL, will present "Eddie: Lincoln's Forgotten Son," a 45-minute program about the short life of Edward Baker Lincoln.  Emery will cover how the early death of (nearly) four-year-old Eddie had lasting influences on the Lincolns, discusses several Lincoln myths and talks about their life in Springfield, long before the presidency.

 

It is free and open to the public.

 

Spring Cleaning? Save personal papers for our Shred Day!

Shred Day across from 30/31 BranchFour area libraries, including Rock Island, are again working together to offer Community Shred Days as part of Money Smart Week Quad Cities, April 21-28, 2012.

 

To use the service, patrons just pull up and drop their materials in locked bins with bonded staff of Document Destruction Services and Recycling Services of Davenport.  All items will be secured and shredded off-site for confidentiality. No shredding is done onsite. The Rock Island Library Shred Day location is:

  • Saturday, April 28, 2012
  • 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street

Help will be available getting materials out of your car, so take advantage of this free once-a-year library program and clean out your old files! No registration requrired.

Rock Island Library is honoring the youngest victims of the Holocaust as part of a community wide remembrance of Anne Frank and the Holocaust.

 

As part of the art exhibit "A Tribute to Children of the Holocaust: Portrait Collages that Bridge the Gap Between Then and Now," the library will offer two programs on Tuesday, April 10:

4:00 p.m. to 5:30: Art reception and book signing with artist and Holocaust educator Barbara Powers. Powers will explain how the exhibit came about, and answer questions about the children it honors. Art rotunda, 2nd floor.

 

5:30 pm: Discussion of The Promise: The Moving Story of a Family in the Holocaust, co-written by Powers and Eva Schloss, a Holocaust survivor. The children's book is based on Schloss' childhood experiences.family. The portrait exhibit is dedicated to Schloss and her brother, a talented artist who did not survive the Holocaust.

March 27 Civil War Program Canceled

Due to a emergency with our speaker, our Tuesday, March 27 program at 2:00 pm at the Main Library with  Civil War scholar Tom Emery, of Carlinville, IL, has been cancelled. This was previously announced as "Eddie: Lincoln's Forgotten Son." The event will be rescheduled in April, so stay tuned!

Children's Room Hosts Circa Cast Member

Circa 21 Theatre will bring a special story event to the Rock Island Main Library Children's Room, at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2. The program features their upcoming children's play, Diary of a Worm, Spider and a Fly, based on the children's book by Doreen Cronin and illustrator Harry Bliss. The event will feature a story presented by actor Marc Ciemiewicz, playing the character of "Worm" and a related craft.

 

Is Spider getting too big for his own skin? Will Fly find her superhero powers in time to save her Aunt Rita from Peril? Will Worm learn to stand on his own feet ... even though he doesn't have feet? We invite you to take a look at the world from a bug's perspective. Perhaps you'll see that their lives are not all that different from yours! This exciting new children's musical is based on the popular books Diary Of A Worm, Diary Of A Spider, and Diary Of A Fly.

April Art Show

A Tribute to Children of the Holocaust, Portrait Collages that Bridge the Gap Between Then and Now, by artist and educator Barbara Powers, will be on exhibit at the Main Library from April 9 to June 8.

 

The exhibit and Ms. Power's school visits are funded by grants from the Scott County Regional Authority and the Rock Island Community Foundation. The exhibit joins a number of Anne Frank and Holocaust remembrance events in the community planned by the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities.
