Maria Nhambu at the Davenport Public Library Eastern Avenue Branch - September 9

Saturday, September 9, 10:30 a.m.

Davenport Public Library – Eastern Avenue Branch, 6000 Eastern Avenue, Davenport IA

The creator of Aerobics with Soul, a popular workout routine based on the tenets of African dance, author Maria Nhambu will share tales of her extraordinary life in a special Davenport library event, along with readings from her memoirs Africa's Child and the newly released America's Daughter.

Born in Tanzania, East Africa, Nhambu was raised by German nuns at an orphanage for mixed-race children, and was eventually able to fulfill her dream of higher education in the United States, where she attended college, became a teacher, and eventually married and raised two children. Nhambu’s first book, Africa’s Child, is a memoir that describes her struggles and hardships while growing up, with the young woman's faith, resilience, and strength allowing her to survive, triumph, and create the life she wanted. America's Daughter, meanwhile, follows the author after arriving in the United States, when Nhambu was forced to face shocking doses of American-style racial discrimination and the discovery that she needed to learn how to survive as a Black American.

Admission to Maria Nhambu's local presentation is free, and more information is available by calling (563)326-7832 or visiting DavenportLibrary.com.
