Break of Reality

St. Ambrose University

Saturday, October 25, 7:30 p.m.

Break of Reality, the latest guests in Quad City Arts' Visiting Artists series, is a cello-rock ensemble whose performers are as versed in the musical languages of Radiohead and Led Zeppelin as they are in that of Johann Sebastian Bach. Yet how many musicians can also boast an equal fluency in the language of Dothraki?

Okay, that's just a guess. But if you're one of the 4.8-million-and-counting who've seen and heard Break of Reality's astounding rendition of the Games of Thrones theme song on YouTube, it's easy to imagine the group's percussionist and three cellists having mastered George R.R. Martin's fictional tongue. They sure seem to have mastered everything else.

Originating at New York's Eastman School of Music in 2004, when co-founders Patrick Laird and Ivan Trevino were freshmen, Break of Reality began as a musical side project playing local coffee shops and small classical venues. Yet the instrumentalists quickly made a name for themselves with their spirited musicianship, dynamic original compositions, and thrilling renditions of classical and rock favorites, leading to the release of 2006's double-disc album The Sound Between and a move to New York City.

There, Break of Reality's busking in Central Park and at numerous subway stops earned them a cult fan base. But as awareness increased through the release of 2009's Spectrum of the Sky and 2012's Covers, with musicians Adrian Daurov and Laura Metcalf joining Lair and Trevino as current group members, that fan base is no longer cult. And certainly not among music critics, considering Time Out New York said Break of Reality "plays with genuine technique and solid intonation but rocks out like it means it," and the New York Press stated, "Songs go from zero to 60 in a split second, turning on a dime to take you from a quiet chamber recital to a thundering arena-rock concert."

This joyous dichotomy will be on display during Break of Reality's public concert at St. Ambrose University's Galvin Fine Arts Center on October 24, after several days spent working with and performing for area students. Longtime educators themselves, the musicians' BreakOfReality.com site lists touring workshops including "Exploring Extended Techniques," "Transcribing Your Favorite Tunes," and "Breaking Expectations." The accompanying photo suggests that expectations might not be the only things broken, but hopefully the kids won't learn to do that.

Daytrotter Communion Clubnight and Codfish Hollow-een Part One

Codfish Hollow Barn

Friday, October 17, and Saturday, October 25

In addition to lame jokes, I'd like to think the Reader's What's Happenin' pages provide a fair amount of information about forthcoming events. But what they don't provide is much instruction for enterprising journalism students who'd like to learn more about the fine points of their trade. Let's see if we can address that with this piece on two forthcoming concerts at the Codfish Hollow Barn.

To begin with, on October 17, the Maquoketa venue will host a number of wonderfully gifted indie artists in its monthly Daytrotter Communion Clubnight. Set to perform this month: The Whigs (pictured), the Nashville-based rockers and late-night-TV fixtures who have released four acclaimed studio albums and toured alongside the likes of Drive-By Truckers, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon; Field Report, the folk act whose debut album Marigolden, released on October 7, led ConsequenceOfSound.net to praise its songs as "clever and compelling gems"; Water Liars, whose Mississippi-based punk-rock duo of Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Andrew Bryant are touring in support of their latest album, Wyoming; and Derik Hultquist, the folk singer/songwriter and Tennessee native so prolific that the Carnival Music label, in 2012, released two of his EPs in the same year.

Then, on October 25, Codfish Hollow Barn delivers the first of two holiday-themed treats in Codfish Hollow-een Part One. Among the performers on the docket: Daniel & the Lion, the indie-rock duo of Jimmie Linville and Daniel Pingrey who recently finished a national tour opening for Counting Crows; and Brooks Strause & the Gory Details, the rockers whose lead singer has released five solo albums including 2011's My Foreign Right Hand and 2013's Acid Casual, and who also performs with the "aggressive ragtime" ensemble the Old Scratch Revival Singers.

Oh, and October 25's Codfish Hollow Barn concert also boasts a set with Polaris, composed of Mark Mulcahy, Dave McCaffrey, and Scott Boutier. They were the house band on Nickelodeon's beloved series The Adventures of Pete & Pete from 1993 to 1996. You probably knew them as Muggy, Jersey, and Harry. This is the first time they've ever toured. Prior to 2104, Polaris only played live once. And they're only playing two gigs in the Midwest: one in Chicago, and one in Maquoketa.

And this, journalism students - with all due respect to the talents mentioned before Polaris - is what as known as "burying the lede." Don't do it. Editors hate it.

For more information on both October 17's Daytrotter Communion Clubnight and October 25's Codfish Hollow-een Part One, call (563)321-0172 or visit CodfishHollowBarnstormers.com.

Pearl JamMusic

Pearl Jam

i wireless Center

Friday, October 17, 7:30 p.m.

"So, Mike, I understand you're writing an article on the iconic, Grammy-winning rockers of Pearl Jam, who are playing Moline's i wireless Center on October 17 and have sold an estimated 60-million records worldwide. I assume, in preparing for the piece, you're boning up on the band's songs?"

"Ah, Jeff, I'm light years past that. Is nothing as it seems? I thought I'd be a better man, more alive, if I were leaving here to go in hiding. 'Off he goes!' they'd say. 'Our love boat captain given to fly on an even flow amongst the waves of oceans! Hail, hail!' But this man of the hour now feels like a dissident animal striving for immortality in a life wasted. Gone. The daughter of my brother Jeremy says I should just breathe - got some supersonic sirens in my head is all. Yet I am mine, and I am a nothingman. A red mosquito who can't save you from the world wide suicide, even given who you are. So mind your manners and don't act the fixer. I spin the black circle, but not for you. The last kiss on my wishlist is as irrelevant as an elderly woman behind the counter in a small town. Olé."

"I take it that's a 'yes.'"

For tickets to Pearl Jam's i wireless Center concert - and the chance to hear some of the band's 40 aforementioned songs - call (800)745-3000 or visit iwirelessCenter.com.
