With the film boasting a Rotten Tomatoes "freshness" rating of 93 percent and the site's critical consensus calling it "a twisty yet heartfelt look at relationships and heartache," director Michel Gondry's and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind enjoys a September 10 screening at Rozz-Tox, this Oscar-winning sci-fi comedy the latest presentation in the Rock Island venue's popular Filmosofia series.
When their relationship turns sour in Eternal Sunshine, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever. Much to his surprise, timid Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is shocked to discover that the love of his life, sparky Clementine (Kate Winslet), has had him erased from her memory. As a result, hurt and angry, Joel wants to pay her back in the same coin, going as far as to undergo a painless but intricate medical procedure to do the same. However, poor Joel is utterly unaware that darkness is an essential part of the light. And as the once-cherished recollections of Clementine gradually fade away, giving way to a soulless black void, something unexpected happens. Now Joel has second thoughts, toying with the idea of stopping the irreversible process.
With its supporting cast boasting Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson, employs elements of psychological drama and science fiction, as well as the use of a nonlinear narrative, to explore the nature of memory and love. Gondry's film premiered in Los Angeles on March 9, 2004, and was released domestically on March 19 to widespread acclaim. The New York Times' A.O. Scott praised it as "cerebral, formally and conceptually complicated, dense with literary allusions and as unabashedly romantic as any movie you'll ever see". Time Out, meanwhile, concluded that "the formidable Gondry/Kaufman/Carrey/Winslet axis works marvel after marvel in expressing the bewildering beauty and existential horror of being trapped inside one's own addled mind, and in allegorising the self-preserving amnesia of a broken but hopeful heart."
The film went on to become a box office success, grossing $73.3 million on a $20 million budget, and was named by the American Film Institute one of the Top 10 Films of 2004. At the 77th Academy Awards, screenwriter Kaufman and "story by" collaborators Pierre Bismuth and director Gondry won Best Original Screenplay, while Winslet received a nomination for Best Actress. Eternal Sunshine has been named by several publications as one of the greatest of the 21st century and gained a cult following. It inspired music projects such as Jay Electronica's 2007 piece "Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge)," Jhené Aiko's 2014 track "Spotless Mind," and Ariana Grande's 2024 album Eternal Sunshine.
The September 10 Filmosofia screening of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will be preceded by a discussion on philosophical themes hosted by Augustana College's Dr. Deke Gould, the reading selection being Epictetus' “The Enchiridion, or The Handbook” from Discourses and Selected Writings.
