Praised by Pitchfork.com for “using her mordant wit to confront serious subjects, exorcising trauma with hooks and humor,” alternative-folk singer/songwriter Caroline Rose and her ensemble The Go Rounds play an April 17 Redstone Room concert in support of the band's February release LONER – a work that, according to Paste magazine, “is a singular artistic statement from its unforgettable album art all the way down.”
Born in Long Island, New York, in 1990, Rose taught herself to play guitar at 13, and recorded a self-titled, self-released EP at age 20, hitting the road and busking when she couldn't land regular gigs. By 2013, she was collaborating with Vermont-based musician and songwriter Jer Coons, who produced and engineered 2013's America Religious – Rose's first album that, like her debut EP, found her tapping into Americana and folk influences. After a significant period of touring, Rose then struck a deal with Thirty Tigers, the marketing and distribution firm that released the singer/songwriter's 2014 I Will Not Be Afraid. A work that found its creator expanding her musical boundaries and embracing an eclectic variety of vintage pop and rockabilly influences, Rose's sophomore album was called “a tour-de-force of Americana, roots, and folk music” by Glide magazine, and quickly picked up for satellite-radio play.
As Rose gained a larger audience, she found herself wanting to make music that better suited her sense of humor, as well as her growing interest in contemporary-pop sounds. After collecting a wider variety of instruments and learning more about production by assembling a home-recording setup, she entered the studio with producer Paul Butler, who had previously worked with Hurray for the Riff Raff and Devendra Banhart. The resulting 2018 album Loner consequently merged Rose's serious ideas with her often humorous approaches, and was met with immediate critical acclaim; ConsequenceOfSound.net called it “an explosion of both passion and personality,” and SputnikMusic.com raved that the “excellent” album's quality “made me want to revisit Loner right after I'd just finished it.”
