The musicians' most recent album Ghost Modern, according to Treblezine.com, boasts a “multi-layered, rich sound that infuses elements of various genres, from new wave to ’90s alt-rock, with some modern indie pop in between.” And on April 13, Mike Deni and his electronic-rock outfit Geographer will perform a Daytrotter concert demonstrating whyRiff magazine stated, “Deni has one of the best rock falsettos out there, and his tremendous vocal range is complemented by a prolific and varied output as a songwriter and the talented musicians with whom he’s able to perform and record.”
Georgrapher originated in 20056 as family strife inspired Deni to relocate from his New Jersey hometown to San Francisco, and for the next several months, he built his eventual outfit's foundation by composing songs on guitar and a synthesizer he found on the street. Adding cellist/electronics player Nathan Blaz and drummer/singer Brian Ostreicher, who originally met while attending the Berklee College of Music, the musicians cut their teeth on the local live circuit in 2006, and by 2008, had released their full-length debut Innocent Ghosts. A year later, the album's song “The Morning” was featured in the film New York, I Love You and the band was listed on SPIN magazine's “Undiscovered Bands You Need to Hear Now” list.
By 2011, Geographer has sold out the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco, headlined the 2,300-seat Fox Theater in Oakland, and was playing to sold-out crowds across the country. With Deni's outfit currently boasting cellist Joyce Lee, guitarist and bass player Duncan Nielsen, and drummer Cody Rhodes, Geographer continues to tour nationally and release acclaimed singles (among them last year's “Read My Mind” and “So Low”), with the ensemble the beneficiary of continuous critical praise. Myth, Geographer's 2012 sophomore album, was lauded by PopMatters.com for featuring “some chillwave here, some dance-pop there, and a lot of really interesting synthesizer work throughout,” while BestNewBands.com applauded Ghost Modern for providing “dreamy arrangements and strong vocals that evoke pure catharsis.”
Geographer performs locally with opening sets by joan and Pulsing, tickets are $12, and more information is available by visiting Daytrotter.com.
