Friday, August 10, 8 p.m.
The Redstone Room, 129 Main Street, Davenport IA
Delivering what Glide magazine called “a night of superb musicianship capable of time travel and otherworldliness,” acclaimed drummer Kofi Baker, son of legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker, brings his three-man ensemble to the Redstone Room on August 10, his Kofi Baker's Psychedelic Trip trio reinventing the music of Cream and inspiring MusicEnthusiast.net to rave, “Across the board, these guys nail the sound and the feel without – and this is important – seeming like some Las Vegas tribute band. They're the real deal.”
As the son of a percussion icon, Baker has a name that’s synonymous with drumming excellence, and made his first live performance with his father on the British television series The Old Grey Whistle Test playing drums at age six. In the early 1980s, Kofi and his father played drum duets throughout Europe, amazing audiences with complex African polyrhythms. Later, Kofi toured with John Ethridge of Soft Machine and gigged in London with Manfred Mann's Steve Waller and Spirit's Randy California, also touring Europe with Steve Marriot’s Humble Pie.
During the early 1990s, Baker toured with Jack Bruce in Budapest, signed with Scotty Brothers Records for the album Lost City, recorded Abstract Logic with Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane, and toured extensivley, including sets featuring drum duets with his father. More recently, he completed The Extreme Guitar Tour with Uli Jon Roth, former lead guitarist for the Scorpions, and Kofi was motivated to form his own Cream band after seeing the group's reunion concert in 2005. With Kofi Baker's Psychedelic Trip also boasting Fran Bannish on guitar and Frankie May on bass, the group captures Cream’s mood and energy while adding their own distinctive styles, with Glide summarizing, “The three-piece understood and grasped Cream's genre-blurring virtuosity and pulled the audience into a vortex of psychedelic rock, blues, the avant-garde, and hard rock.”
Tickets to Kofi Baker's Psychedelic Trip are $10-12, the August 10 concert begins at 8 p.m., and more information and reservations are available by calling (563)326-1333 or visiting RiverMusicExperience.org.
