Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel, 304 East Third Street, Davenport IA
Performing in support of their self-titled, critically lauded 2017 album, the Canadian power-pop ensemble Sam Coffey & the Irons Lungs perform a February 26 Moeller Nights concert in downtown Davenport, demonstrating why Spill magazine wrote that the musicians “seamlessly sit in a spot that connects modern-indie and post-rock textures with the style of punk rock greats of yesterday and the flair of glam rockers from the early 1970s.”
Currently based in Toronto, Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs were formed in 2007 by Coffey, a former mechanic’s apprentice from Kitchener, Ontario, with its five others members collected from other small towns in Ontario. The septer rapidly ingratiated themselves in Toronto’s punk scene, releasing a stream of DIY singles before signing to Oakland's punk/garage rock label Southpaw Records for their 2014 LP Gates of Hell, which received praise from outlets including Pitchfork, Noisey, and Spin magazine. Touring extensively and playing alongside such bands as Redd Kross, Black Lips, Screaming Females, and The Flamin' Grooves, Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs have become regulars in DIY venues throughout Canada, and now the United States.
For the nine-song Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs album released last July, the band sought to build upon the lo-fi aesthetic of their earlier releases and push themselves beyond their garage roots. They began working with producer Alex Bonenfant (METZ, Crystal Castles), who brought them into a studio for the first time, and embraced their abiding love for, and near encyclopedic knowledge of, 70s power pop, honing a potent brand of guitar music that draws influence from a broad swath of the genre’s history. Spill magazine described the results as “simply brilliant,” and added that the album “goes to show that punk rock can be more than bashing away at blisteringly fast speeds with fuzzy power chords.”
Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs play the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel at 7 p.m. with an opening set by Road Soda, admission is $12-15, and more information on the night is available by visiting MoellerNights.com.
