Two evening concerts boasting no fewer than six ensembles will begin a musical March at Davenport's St. Ambrose University, when the school's Galvin Fine Arts Center hosts four groups of campus and community musicians in the March 2 Winter Vocal Concert, and the Rogalski Center houses another two in the March 3 SAU Jazz Concert.
Performing in the March 2 Winter Vocal Concert are a quartet of singing outfits: the University Chorale, the Chamber Singers, Bee Sharp, and Bella Voce. St. Ambrose's University Chorale features a select ensemble of students and community singers studying and performing significant choral literature of all periods and styles, including an emphasis on fascinating new works by living composers. The Chamber Singers are a select, mixed-voice choir of 15 - 20 artists that performs literature for the chamber choir, particularly music of the Renaissance, plus the Early Baroque, and 19th Century Vocal Chamber periods. Bee Sharp is an all-male ensemble that performs a wide variety of music ranging from classical and Renaissance to Broadway, pop and blues. And the similarly auditioned ensemble Bella Voce is St. Ambrose's all-female ensemble that performs literature ranging from classical to popular music.
Meanwhile, the SAU Jazz Concert on March 3 features performances by the gifted instrumentalists of the SAU Jazz Ensemble and the talented vocalists of STAMVOJA. The Jazz Ensemble specializes in presenting jazz from all eras in addition to Latin, funk, fusion, blues, and rock arrangements. And STAMVOJA – an acronym for “St. Ambrose Vocal Jazz” – boasts an auditioned ensemble of students who perform a wide range of music that includes jazz but oftentimes features contemporary a cappella music, frequently performed in original arrangements.
Both the Winter Vocal Concert and Jazz Concert are free and open to the public, and more information is available by calling (563)333-6001 or visiting SAU.edu/music/ensembles.
