TPQC Will Honor Longtime Physician Advocate, Dr. Louis Katz

Saturday, March 10, 2018 I Rhythm City Casino, Davenport, Iowa

The Project of the Quad Cities is set to host the 25th Annual Red Ribbon Dinner at the Rhythm City Casino this Saturday, March 10. It’s an evening to share the many successes of the last year as well as outline our goals for the year to come. We’re excited to be working hard towards ZERO new HIV infections in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas with the “Getting to Zero” campaign. We’ll share more about that strategy, the many programs and services available to people living with HIV as well as the prevention efforts that are underway. This celebratory event is also an opportunity to toast our wonderful donors and supporters.

We are delighted to be awarding the first ever Dr. Louis Katz Advocacy Award to its namesake, Dr. Louis Katz. Dr. Katz is chief medical officer of America's Blood Centers and former executive vice president of Medical Affairs of the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Davenport, Iowa. He is also a clinical infectious diseases physician responsible for a Ryan White Title 3 comprehensive  AIDS clinic, hospital epidemiologist for Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, and medical director of the Scott County (Iowa) Health Department.

Dr. Katz has a long history of demonstrating his compassion and caring, especially towards those who were marginalized by the stigma that people living with HIV and AIDS faced in the early days of the epidemic. When the AIDS epidemic reached the Quad Cities in 1985, he was the only infectious disease specialist in the area. He, along with his nurses, began caring for patients at St. Luke’s Hospital, now part of the Genesis Health System. Commonly referred to as “4 North”, they created a safe haven for patients. Many of his patients were either too ill to work and often did not have health insurance but none were turned away. It is in this spirit of working for the greater good; caring for the underserved and marginalized; and advocating on behalf of those facing stigma and barriers to care, that we are proud to honor Dr. Katz with this award.
