Bill would help parents make sure their children get the best education possible
Des Moines, IA – Americans for Prosperity-Iowa (AFP-IA), the leading grassroots organization in the Hawkeye state, today voiced its strong support for the Iowa Student Opportunity Act, House Study Bill 651, introduced by House Education Committee Chairman Walt Rogers. The bill would establish an Education Saving Grant program that would allow families of Iowa students enrolled in public schools to use 90% of what the state currently spends to educate each student per year and use it for tuition at a private school that may be a better fit for their child. The bill would also greatly improve the environment for charter schools in the state in an effort to create a broad menu of choices for Iowa families. Educational choice programs have a successful track record in other states and in Iowa could lead to better educational outcomes for more children.

“This bill recognizes education is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Every student deserves access to the education that best meets their needs and helps them achieve their full potential in life and their zip code and economic status shouldn’t stand in the way. Chairman Rogers deserves tremendous credit for introducing this important bill and he can be sure AFP-Iowa will work alongside our coalition partners and legislators in the Capitol and at the grassroots level to get this bill enacted into law. Our activists are energized and ready to go! We urge the entire Iowa legislature to make this bill a priority and quickly get it to Governor Reynolds’ desk for her signature.”
