(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA) – On Thursday, September 7, 2017, the African American Museum of Iowa will recognize four outstanding individuals as History Makers at the Museum’s annual History Makers Gala. The honorees will be presented awards and accolades for the significant impact they have made in their communities and their indelible mark on Iowa’s rich history.
The History Makers take to the stage as guests gather at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. This year’s honorees are Deborah Berry of Waterloo, Leon Moseley of Waterloo, Dr. Jerome Pierson of Sioux City, and Dale Todd of Cedar Rapids. Deborah Berry (Waterloo) served her community and the state as a career politician, advocating for children, seniors and people with disabilities. Longtime community activist Leon Mosley (Waterloo) uses political platforms and community organizations to aid his efforts to eliminate crime. Dr. Jerome Pierson (Sioux City) was inspired to become a cardiovascular doctor to serve as a role model for black youth and has earned respect from his peers and community. Respected businessman and civic leader Dale Todd has led efforts to upgrade city parks and install the Cedar River Trail and is committed to raising awareness about epilepsy.
Guests will be in for a treat with a gourmet dinner, light jazz, cash bar, Heads or Tails game, and a chance to purchase items from the Museum’s “pop-up” store. The event’s Premier Sponsor, the University of Iowa’s Chief Diversity Office has been a long-time supporter of the Museum. Gala guests will be greeted by the University’s President J. Bruce Harreld as the event kicks off.
Proceeds benefit the AAMI's efforts to carry out its mission to preserve, exhibit, and teach the African American heritage of Iowa. The reception begins and the “pop-up” store opens at 5:30pm. The program begins at 6:15pm. Seats are $50 per person and can be purchased online at the Museum’s website www.BlackIowa.org. Named tables are available as well as some remaining sponsorship opportunities. The African American Museum of Iowa’s mission is to preserve, exhibit, and teach the African American heritage of Iowa. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00am – 4:00pm and is located at 55 12th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
