New Liberty, Iowa – An AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team is serving with Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois (GSEIWI) at Camp Liberty from March 15 to April 28. The team is helping prepare for the influx of campers over the summer.
The AmeriCorps NCCC team of eight from the North Central Region campus of Vinton, Iowa are building bunk beds, installing insulation and constructing walls in the Arts & Craft center, making infrastructure improvements in the saddle room in the Equestrian Arena alongside feeding horses in the morning. The AmeriCorps NCCC team is going to help facilitate the GSEIWI Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition event at Camp Liberty.
Through their service, AmeriCorps NCCC members are bringing the community of GSEIWI closer together by ensuring that the Girl Scouts are going to be more comfortable in a camp setting and providing a safer place for the camp counselors and the Girl Scouts to learn leadership skills.
“Considering I was a Girl Scout at a young age, I am excited to help provide a more welcoming camp experience while also gaining trail building skills and getting over my fear of working with horses. It is giving me a great opportunity for self-growth,” says the AmeriCorps NCCC member Tabitha Aguirre from Westminster, Maryland.
GSEIWI goals are building courage, confidence and character in girls to make more female leaders. Camp Liberty is the perfect place to provide these skills through their equestrian arena, rope course, and water sport opportunities. There are plenty of other engaging activities at the camp.
The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC Members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and community Service (CNCS). CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in Service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President’s national call to service initiative.
