Grassley Among Top Supporters of Transparency, Among Most Effective at Getting Bills Signed into Law, Missed Zero Votes

WASHINGTON – GovTrack, an independent organization that tracks federal legislation and information about Members of Congress, recently released its annual “Report Card,” a special year-end project that reports the legislative statistics of Members of Congress. U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) received high marks in a number of categories, including the following:

•                     Got more bills out of committee than any other senator

•                     Got “influential” cosponsors more often than any other senator, an indicator of legislation’s likelihood of passing

•                     Ranked the “Top Leader” of all senators, demonstrating the greatest ability to gain cosponsors

•                     Got bipartisan cosponsors on more bills than any other senator

•                     Ranked second in support of government transparency legislation

•                     Introduced the second most number of bills

•                     Ranked among the top senators in getting laws passed and signed into law

•                     Missed zero votes, receiving perfect attendance

“Accountability, transparency and bipartisanship are necessary for good government and a functional democracy,” Grassley said. “My number one priority is to effectively represent the people of Iowa as their U.S. senator, and these principles shape and guide my legislative efforts every day.”

Got his bills out of committee the most often

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley ranked in the 99th percentile of all senators for passing bills out of his committee the most often compared to all senators. Grassley introduced 20 bills in 2017 that passed out of committee and to the Senate floor for consideration.

Got “influential” cosponsors the most often

Grassley ranked in the 99th percentile of all senators for getting influential cosponsors for his legislative work. Twenty-one of Grassley’s bills and resolutions in 2017 had a cosponsor who was a chair or ranking member of a committee to which the bill was referred.

Ranked the “top leader”

GovTrack’s leadership analysis looks at which Members are cosponsoring whose bills. According to this analysis, a higher score shows a greater ability to gain cosponsors. Grassley ranked in the 99th percentile of all senators for leadership.

Got bipartisan cosponsors on the most bills

Grassley ranked in the 99th percentile of all Senators for working across the aisle on legislation. In 2017, 37of Grassley’s 64 bills and resolutions had both a Democratic and Republican cosponsor.

Supported government transparency the second most often

Grassley ranked in the 98th percentile of all senators in his support for government transparency – a cornerstone principle of his time in Congress. For this rating, GovTrack looked at whether Grassley supported any of the eight government transparency, accountability and effectiveness bills in the Senate in 2017. Grassley received six points, based on one point for cosponsoring and three points for sponsoring any of the eight bills.

Introduced the second most bills

Grassley ranked in the 98th percentile of all senators in bill introductions, introducing 64 bills and resolutions in 2017.

Laws enacted

Grassley ranked in the 97th percentile of all senators in laws enacted, introducing five bills that became law in 2017. That number reflects bills that were incorporated into other measures.

No missed votes

Grassley missed zero votes, receiving a perfect voting record in 2017.
