The Day will include:
Instructions and commentary by Jack Lawlor, periods of sitting and walking meditation, mindful eating, vegetarian lunch (vegetable soup or black bean soup, salad, bread, fruit), mindful movement, questions and group discussion, and desserts with social time.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. but please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early so we can begin promptly at 9:00.
Noble Silence will begin at 9:00. Participants will sit, walk and have lunch in silence. This is a beautiful way to enjoy the centering peace of the group and to touch our inner stillness. Silence will end when the question and discussion period begins later in the afternoon.
Jack Lawlor has been practicing in organized Buddhist meditation groups, known as sanghas, since the mid-1970s. In 1992, he was ordained as a Dharma Teacher by Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh in a Transmission of the Lamp Ceremony conducted at Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village Practice Center. Jack has since led over 100 retreats and Days of Mindfulness across the United States and in Hue, Vietnam. In collaboration with Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack compiled the book Friends on the Path, on the subject of spiritual community building, published by Parallax Press.
Mr. Lawlor is a co-founder of the Lakeside Buddha Sangha in Evanston, Illinois, and is active in the Chicago Chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship where he formerly served on their national board of directors. Jack has also served as the President of the Chicago-based Buddhist Council of the Midwest and is currently a member of the Care-Taking Council of the Plum Village Lineage North American Dharma Teachers Council, an association of lay and monastic Dharma Teachers in the U.S. and Canada.
