DAVENPORT, IOWA (August 19, 2019) — On Tuesday, Auston McLain will launch his bid for the Davenport City Council’s Fifth Ward.

McLain, 34, is the Outreach Advocate at Braking Traffik, a program of Family Resources, which works with survivors of human trafficking.

"Working in the anti-human trafficking movement and sexual assault field, I encounter some of the most challenging parts of our community, as well as some of the best," McLain said.

"Davenport needs representation that supports each of its residents. Everyone needs to know they have an ally by their side. I'd be remiss if I didn't do everything possible to make Davenport a better place to raise a family."

McLain grew up in Rock Island before traveling the country for several years to work in social services with at-risk populations. He also supported various political campaigns and worked as a correctional officer.

"After several years traveling the country affecting change," McLain said, "I returned to Davenport last year to make an impact in my community. After the last year we've had, Davenport needs leadership now more than ever."

McLain serves on the Board of Directors for Quad Citians Affirming Diversity (QCAD), a local non-profit dedicated to the health and well-being of the LGBT+ community.

"Quad Citians Affirming Diversity has been around for nearly thirty years helping LGBT+ youth in the area. As a teenager, I looked to QCAD to be the support and safe space I needed when I came out. I'm so proud to volunteer with organizations like this one so they can support our youth for the next thirty years and beyond."

McLain outlined his commitments on Davenport's City Council. Including:

  • Advocate for programs which assist those in the community who are most vulnerable
  • Support for local law enforcement to address rising crime, especially among juveniles
  • Ensure the Fifth Ward remains a welcoming and inclusive neighborhood to raise a family
