DAVENPORT, IOWA (September 21, 2023) — Azubuike African American Council for the Arts is proud to announce its selection as one of the eleven Iowa arts, culture, history, and humanities organizations chosen to participate in the esteemed Iowa Culture Leadership Cohort program. The State Historical Society of Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council jointly administer this exciting opportunity.

The Iowa Culture Leadership Cohort program, now in its second class after its successful launch in 2022, is designed to empower cultural arts and history organizations throughout the state. By fostering leadership skills and enhancing organizational capacity in crucial areas such as operations, sustainability, and programming, the program aims to shape the future of Iowa's cultural landscape.

Participants in the program will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that includes workshops, expert-led sessions, peer learning, mentorship opportunities, and the possibility of financial support to realize their identified goals over the course of two years.

Susan Kloewer, Administrator of the State Historical Society of Iowa, expressed the program's mission: "We created the Iowa Culture Leadership Cohort a year ago to identify and support Iowa's next generation of cultural arts and history leaders. The program allows participants to sharpen their skills as their organizations look to the future."

David Schmitz, Director of the Iowa Arts Council, emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of Iowa's cultural organizations, saying, "This program addresses an important need that Iowans brought forward in our last strategic planning process. By emphasizing capacity building and peer learning, we hope participants are better empowered and equipped to continue strengthening their organizations' missions."

Azubuike African American Council for the Arts is thrilled to be part of this prestigious program. It aligns perfectly with Azubuike's mission to celebrate and promote African-American arts and culture in Iowa. This opportunity will undoubtedly enable our organization to grow and thrive, further enriching the state's cultural fabric.
