DES MOINES, IOWA (May 2, 2019) — Senator Beto O’Rourke will return to Iowa on Saturday for his third trip to the Hawkeye State since announcing his candidacy for President of the United States in March. His four-day drive will include grassroots events in southwest, central, and northeast Iowa. On his previous two trips to Iowa, Beto has held 44 events in 21 counties to meet with, listen to, and learn from those he wants to serve and represent. Since announcing his run for President of the United States, he has held 118 events with tens of thousands of Americans in 94 cities across 13 states and the District of Columbia. O’Rourke has personally driven 4,697 miles as his grassroots campaign has crisscrossed the United States answering more than 730 questions from voters. This is his first trip to Iowa since releasing his ambitious plan to tackle climate change — the first major policy proposal O’Rourke has released since announcing his bid for the presidency. The plan has been praised by environmental groups across the country and was called “the most comprehensive climate policy proposal put out by any 2020 contender to date.” The four part framework would mobilize $5 trillion over 10 years — spurred by the single largest investment in fighting climate change in history — and would include a legally-enforceable standard to guarantee the US achieves net-zero emissions by 2050 and gets half way there by 2030. The proposal addresses rural-specific needs, including expanding markets that allow farmers and ranchers to profit from the reductions in emissions they secure and increasing funding to the federal crop-insurance program.
