Summer is just around the corner and so is the heat and humidity. While many of us look forward to these hazy, lazy days it can be an extremely dangerous time of year for older adults. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals 65 years of age and older are less likely to sense and respond to temperature changes resulting in an average of 675 deaths per year.
In an effort to help Quad City area older adults stay cool this summer, the Center For Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI) is gearing up for its Be A Fan To Seniors - Summer Heat Relief Program.
CASI is now accepting new 20” box-style fans or monetary donations that will be used to purchase new fans for older adults in need of heat relief this summer. Donations can be dropped off at CASI, 1035 West Kimberly Road, Davenport, IA 52806 during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Be A Fan To Seniors – Summer Heat Relief program kicks off this month and continues through Labor Day.
“The program helps any senior who needs a temporary cooling system. Many of them have no air conditioning or can’t afford to run their A/C all the time. Sometimes they need something to get them buy until the air in repaired and replaced,” said Kathy Horrell, Director of Senior Services at CASI.
*** Area seniors in need of heat relief should contact CASI at 563.386.7477. Fans are distributed to individuals over the age of 50 with photo I.D. Due to high demand for this program, only one fan per household. ***
Generous community and corporate donations allow CASI to give out more than 150 new box-style fans to area seniors each year.
