CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (February 2, 2026) This February, the African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) will host special programming in honor of Black History Month.

Throughout the month visitors can enjoy a pop-up exhibit made possible by the NAACP of Cedar Rapids.

The exhibit features art by Ames CSD elementary school students led by their art teacher, Brian Randolph. Their collaborative art pieces highlight notable Black Americans. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Visitors can also participate in a book exchange throughout February. Simply bring a book and take a book. The AAMI is open Tuesday-Friday, 12-4PM, and Saturday 10AM-4PM.

In addition to these month-long opportunities, the AAMI is also offering several programs.

  • Flowerpot Painting at the AAMI | Thursday, February 5, 6:30PM | $10
  • $1 AAMI Admission | Saturday, February 7, 10AM-4PM
  • "Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power" Screening | Thursday, February 12, 6PM | Free
  • "Sol Butler: An Olympian’s Odyssey through Jim Crow America" Author Talk | Thursday, February 26, 6:30PM | Free

The African American Museum of Iowa proudly celebrates Black history year-round. In February, the AAMI joins others across the country in commemorating Black achievement while continuing its pursuit to educate our communities across the state about Iowa’s African American heritage. We hope you will join us, both in February and year-round, in commemorating and celebrating Iowa's Black history and culture.

About AAMI: The African American Museum of Iowa is a statewide museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and teaching Iowa’s African American history. As Iowa’s leading educational resource on the topic, we educate more than 30,000 people each year through museum tours, traveling exhibits, research services, youth and adult education programs, and community and fundraising events.
