Davenport, Iowa, December 13, 2016 – Davenport’s five Full Service Community Schools were recently awarded two grants through Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. The grants will make it possible to provide families who participate in the school-based food pantries with oral health care supplies including toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss, as well as oral health care education. The five schools include Buchanan Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Madison Elementary, Monroe Elementary and Smart Intermediate.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach submitted the grant applications and will work with Davenport Community Schools and River Bend Foodbank to distribute the oral health care supplies during the school-based food pantry distributions at each of the five locations.

On Tuesday, December 6 th , toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss were distributed to each family member at Jefferson and Madison food pantries. A parent from Madison Elementary expressed gratitude for these items, stating, “It has helped us out a lot, we have been homeless and moved around a lot so we don't have a lot of money to buy these things.”

Items were distributed at Buchanan Elementary on December 7th and will be distributed at Smart Intermediate and Monroe Elementary on December 20th .
