The Elephant Club hosts its 6th Annual Flowers on the River event for women’s lives lost to abuse
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – The 6th annual Flowers on the River event will be held 5-6 p.m. Thursday, June 15 at Schwiebert Park in Rock Island, Illinois. This event is hosted by the Elephant Club to remember and honor local women who have lost their lives to domestic abuse. Names will be read aloud and a flower will be placed in the river to honor each life lost to domestic abuse.
In 2016, 9 women in Iowa and 46 adult women in Illinois were killed in domestic abuse murders. A majority of the women were killed by a spouse or former spouse.
The Elephant Club is a group of men and volunteers who serve as positive role models for men, women, and children in our community. The problem of violence against women cannot be solved by women alone. The Elephant Club members stand as witnesses that violence against women and children will not be tolerated. Members define their societal responsibility as men through love, care, and respect for others. The Elephant Club works closely with Family Resources’ Engaging Males program to provide mentorship to youth in our communities.
