The event will honor Democratic women in Iowa who have made a difference in their communities and in Iowa politics

DES MOINES, IOWA — Emerge Iowa, the state’s premier organization that recruits, trains, and provides a powerful network to Democratic women who want to run for office, will partner with DAWN’s List to host the DAWN Awards on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at the Holiday Inn Downtown Mercy Campus in Des Moines. The event will commemorate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day and honor Democratic women of the Hawkeye State, awarding several standout individuals for their contributions to Iowa politics. Founded at the end of 2017, this year Emerge Iowa will train its first full cohort of aspiring women political leaders in its signature six-month program after hosting a candidate boot camp in 2018.

The DAWN Awards will honor five exceptional Democratic women for their work in Iowa politics and activism, with each award recognizing a unique aspect of community involvement and public service. The Rising Star Award will recognize a woman under the age of 30, who has shown dedication to her community and to Democratic values. The DAWN Activist Award will honor an Iowa woman who has positively and significantly impacted the role of women in public life in Iowa in the past year. The DAWN Elected Local Official Award will be awarded to a public official who has proven to be a strong leader and advocate for women at the local level, or who is a locally elected official or an elected Democrat Party County Chair. The DAWN Jo Ann Zimmerman Elected State Official Award will be given to a public official who has proven to be a strong leader and advocate for women at the state level. And the DAWN Barbara Boatwright Award will acknowledge a woman whose life’s work has advanced Democratic values, or a woman who has achieved a noteworthy accomplishment in her community or in the State, which may be a result of paid or non-paid work. In 2019, Emerge Iowa alumnae will run up and down the ballot to make change, help push forward policies that are responsive to all Iowans and achieve gender parity in elected office. This event will introduce attendees to the work Emerge Iowa does, the women who are working to make change in the Hawkeye State and the women who will be backing them up every step of the way.
