WASHINGTON DC (Februrary 28, 2019) — Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles "Chuck" Grassley praised the decision announced today by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide relief with respect to the March 1 deadline for farmers and fishermen who chose to forgo making quarterly estimated tax payments in 2018. After hearing from farmers, tax-return preparers, and the Iowa State University Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation, Grassley wrote Commissioner Rettig on February 21 seeking exactly this kind of relief. Full text of that letter can be found HERE.

“I appreciate Commissioner Rettig’s understanding that these are unusual circumstances for farmers, with the recent government shutdown adding complications to filing season along with farmers filing their first returns under the new tax law. This was precisely the type of situation Congress envisioned when it authorized the IRS to provide relief under certain circumstances.”
