DAVENPORT, Iowa – July 11, 2017 – The innovation available to patients and staff at the new Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street has helped Genesis be recognized as Most Wired by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine for the 14th consecutive year.

Genesis Health System is the only Iowa hospital or health system to be recognized as Most Wired 14 consecutive years.

Genesis has consistently adopted innovative technologies to accomplish key goals of safety, patient outcomes and quality of care. The Genesis history of using advanced technology has extended to the $150 million expansion and renovation of Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street.

Genesis has centralized all surgery into 12 new surgical suites and 4 treatment rooms and also has moved acute care patient floors to the East Rusholme Street campus.

Examples of the use of innovative technologies to reach key goals are Cerner CareAware RoomLink™, Cerner CareAware myStation™ and Steris surgical integration.

The opening of the expanded and renovated East Rusholme Street campus has made new technologies visible to patients.

“One of the advancements patients will notice now are ‘smart rooms’ that combine technologies that in the past were disparate systems that weren’t coordinated,’’ said Rob Frieden, vice president of information services, Genesis Health System. “Patients, for example, will be able to see on a smart screen that a healthcare provider is entering their room when this feature is enabled.

“They are able to order movies and entertainment in their rooms. And most importantly, they can be empowered to learn about their illness, a treatment plan, medications for their illness and can learn about their upcoming surgery.’’

Cerner CareAware myStation™ is an interactive patient system that transforms the television in the patient’s room into a comprehensive entertainment, education, communication and care delivery hub.

Cerner RoomLink allows care staff to learn about a patient and the patient’s profile from a video screen outside the room. For example, a patient’s dietary restrictions, risk for falls, or allergies can be determined from the monitor.

The Steris OR Integration Systems are designed to support the needs of high-volume, complex operating rooms by coordinating the movement of equipment necessary. The system coordinates imaging equipment so that the operating room teams have the visual images where they are needed.

Frieden said Genesis in the past year has also adopted technology to make non-emergent care more convenient for patients. For example, patients can go to www.genesishealth.com and secure an appointment time at Genesis Convenience Care locations and at Genesis CareNow in the West Locust Street Hy-Vee store in Davenport.

Genesis is also expanding its use of telehealth, allowing Genesis patients to see a care provider remotely 24/7/365 for non-emergent care.

"Our focus is always patient safety and quality of care,'' Frieden said. "Will the new technology make our patients safer? Will it provide them with a

better patient experience?

"And finally, will the new technology also create efficiencies for our caregivers and staff? Those are the questions we ask when we consider implementing new technologies.''

Most Wired hospitals are also using technology to build patient engagement with the individual’s lifestyle in mind, which includes electronic access to their care team.

The nation’s Most Wired hospitals and health systems demonstrate better outcomes in patient safety, risk-adjusted mortality rates and other key quality measures through the use of information technology, according to analysis.

The Most Wired winners are featured in the July edition of Hospitals and Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, the publication of the American Hospital Association.
