AMANA, Iowa- Commemorate and celebrate over a century and a half of German Iowa in the Amana Colonies on Saturday, April 29th.  German Iowa and the Global Midwest is a series of linked events exploring Iowa’s multicultural history through the largest group of European origin to settle in the state.  These events will shine light on present-day issues, including pro- and anti-immigration sentiment, the value and challenges of bilingualism, and issues of multiculturalism.

The University of Iowa created a traveling exhibit that will move throughout Iowa in 2017.  As a part of hosting the traveling exhibit from April 26th through May 8th, the Amana Heritage Museum will sponsor an all-day program on Saturday, April 29th that is free to the public and will offer all new members to sign up for one free year of membership.

Events at the museum will run from 9am to 7pm.  The day begins with a remembrance of local WWI veterans.  Later, the public can access the Amana Heritage Museum archives to view rare documents and books that cover the community’s 300-year past.  A Community Open House Reception begins at 5pm.

Highlights of the event will be a series of three lectures—German Iowa During WWI by Prof. Dr. Glenn Ehrstine, University of Iowa; The Amana Society during World War I by Jon Childers, Amana Heritage Museum; and Celestial, Local, and German: The “Amana” Meteorite as Historical Nexus by Prof. Dr. Tyler Carrington, Cornell College.

The German Iowa and Global Midwest traveling exhibit and the newly renovated Noe House exhibits may be viewed all day.
