DES MOINES, IOWA (June 25, 2026) — Governor Kim Reynolds has announced that she has appointed Patrick Tomka as Chief Operating Officer of the Office of the Governor.
Tomka has served as the governor's Senior Tax and Economic Policy Advisor since October 2021 and was instrumental in developing legislation for the governor’s income, unemployment and property tax reform packages in recent years.
He will retain his current policy responsibilities while in his new role.
Tomka replaces Jacob Nicholson who was recently named Chief Efficiency Officer for the Iowa Board of Regents.
Nicholson joined the governor’s senior staff in November 2022, after having served at the Iowa Department of Homeland Security since 2008.
“I am fortunate to have had strong leaders on my team who have played significant roles in making Iowa an even better place,” said Gov Reynolds.
“Our state government is more efficient and effective today because of Jake Nicholson’s contributions, and the systems he helped modernize will continue to provide value moving forward. There is no one more qualified to lead a similar effort for the Board of Regents, and I wish Jake and his family the very best.
“Patrick Tomka is a trusted advisor I can rely on in any circumstance. His leadership as Chief Operating Officer will be vital as we complete the work of my administration over the coming months, helping ensure our teams finish strong and remain focused on serving the people of Iowa until our last day.”
