DAVENPORT, IOWA (May 8, 2019) — It’s like stepping back in time. The Heritage House will be open every day during the Great Mississippi Valley Fair in celebration of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds’ 100th anniversary.

The fair runs July 30 through August 4.

Long-time friend of the fair Lois Schurr is coordinating Heritage House activities. She has invited embroidery and quilt guilds to put on demonstrations. Schurr also is looking for outside exhibitors to demonstrate old-time activities like cider-making, sheep-shearing, butter-churning, and ice cream-making.

For more information, call Schurr at (563) 343-8315.

The Heritage House is located just east of the fairgrounds’ tree- shaded picnic area behind the Machine Shed building. The aroma of burning firewood might also be a good way to find it; volunteers will be cooking a meal on an old wood-stove.

A drive for stockholders in 1919 and early 1920 resulted in 832 individuals and commercial firms subscribing for fairgrounds’ corporation stock, eventually giving birth to what was then called the Mississippi Valley Fair and Exposition.
