DES MOINES, IOWA (May 24, 2019) — The Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) appreciates Governor Kim Reynolds and the Legislature's recognition that extending the state penny sales tax for school infrastructure is critical for all Iowa students. Sustainable funding is vital for Iowa school boards and districts to provide safe, modern school-buildings and ensure students have access to 21st century technology for their learning.   "The sales-tax is a vital funding stream because it provides funds for building repairs, new facilities, technology and school security. Where our students learn is an important part of their overall education," said IASB Board President and Pella Board President Joan Corbin, "Today, more than ever, we are focused on school safety efforts, and this legislation provides funding allocated specifically for features like secure entrances, security-cameras, safe rooms, and more."  The state-penny sales-tax, set to expire in 2029, will be extended through 2051. According to IASB staff-analysis, the extension provides an estimated $19 billion in school-infrastructure improvements and property tax-relief from FY 2030 through FY 2051. $150 million will go toward investments in career academies.   "We are committed to preparing students for their future. In Pella, we've used SAVE funds to help fund our career academy. This has changed how students learn — modern labs, upgraded equipment, enhanced technology, and flexible spaces for hands-on learning," said Corbin.

Iowa schools once again have a reliable funding source to make long-term facility plans and bond against revenue from the sales-tax. We appreciate the leadership of our elected officials and their commitment to meet the needs of Iowa public schools.  IASB is a nonprofit organization representing Iowa's 330 public school districts, nine area education agencies and 15 community colleges.
