DES MOINES, IOWA (April 3, 2019) — Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price released the following statement recognizing ten years of marriage equality in Iowa: “Today marks a decade of marriage equality in Iowa, when the Iowa Supreme Court issued a historic ruling paving the way for loving same-sex couples the freedom to marry. Iowa has a long tradition as a leader for equality, and the Supreme Court’s decision in Varnum v Brien laid the groundwork for the marriage equality movement in states across the country. "But even as we celebrate the anniversary of a historic victory for the LGBTQ+ community in Iowa, we cannot forget that there are those who are working right now to curtail our community’s rights. In fact, just this year in the legislature, we once again saw legislation introduced that would have made it legal to deny services to LGBTQ+ couples. “Tonight, I get to go home to my wonderful husband and share my life with him — and so many other gay and lesbian couples get to do the same. But we cannot stop fighting until we reach full, lived equality.”
