AMES, IOWA (September 10, 2026) — The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener Program will now offer Garden Academy on-demand year-round for Iowa Home Gardener trainees. Garden Academy serves as the core statewide horticulture training for all Iowa Master Gardener volunteers and helps participants build a strong foundation in horticulture and practical gardening skills.
The Iowa Home Gardener track of Garden Academy is ideal for adult learners, home gardeners, homesteaders and green industry professionals seeking a comprehensive introduction to horticulture for home landscapes and gardens.
The course includes approximately ten weeks of content, which participants can complete at their own pace. Topics covered include:
- Plant Basics and Propagation
- Soil Health and Nutrient Management
- Growing Edible Crops
- Trees, Shrubs and Landscape Plants
- Ornamentals and Indoor Plants
- Diagnosing Plant Problems
- Weed and Pest Management
- Sustainable Gardening and Wildlife
“We are excited to increase access to the course for our non-volunteer audience by now offering the Iowa Home Gardener track 100% asynchronously, year-round,” said Alicia Herzog, Iowa Master Gardener program manager for ISU Extension and Outreach.
“We hope self-motivated adult learners will value having access to a high-quality educational offering that fits their busy schedules.”
Iowa Home Gardener participants may purchase their spot in the course from the ISU Extension Store. Participants have access to all course materials for twelve months from the date of purchase. Upon successful completion, Iowa Home Gardener trainees will receive a certificate of completion recognizing their achievement.
