Members of the Turf Club at Iowa State University accept the GCSAA Spirit Award and donation to the club

AMES, IOWA (February 28, 2019) — Jarrett Chapman and 18 members from the Turf Club at Iowa State University attended the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Turf Bowl in San Diego, California, and the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Student Challenge in Phoenix, Arizona.

At the conferences, Chapman, from Davenport, Iowa, was a member of the second place Iowa State team at the GCSAA Turf Bowl. There were 31 teams of four students competing at the STMA event and 63 teams of four at the GCSAA event.

The contests consist of exams that test the skills of future turfgrass managers by testing identification, pest-management, soil-identification, equipment-identification, irrigation skills, and turfgrass scenario-management and problem-solving. The students prepare for this exam throughout the fall by reviewing their turfgrass knowledge.

Iowa State also won the Collegiate School Spirit Award at GCSAA, by having the most students Tweet answers to questions posted on Twitter. Students received a cash prize to the club.

The club advisers are Nick Christians, University Professor in horticulture, and Adam Thoms, assistant professor of horticulture.
