DES MOINES, IOWA (November 4, 2019) — State Treasurer Michael L Fitzgerald announced the appointment of Karen Austin as Chief of Staff for the state treasurer's office. Austin has worked in the treasurer's office since 1990 and was appointed deputy treasurer in 2003.

"Karen has been an outstanding employee and leader in our office over the past 29 years," said Fitzgerald. "Her skills, training and leadership will continue to be a great asset to the treasurer's as she assumes her new role as Chief of Staff."

"I am proud to work for State Treasurer Fitzgerald," Austin said. "I am honored with the new opportunity and plan to approach the challenge with enthusiasm."

In her new capacity, Austin will play an oversight role over all treasury operations and consumer programs. Austin earned her BA in sociology and political science from Simpson College, her Certified Public Managers certification (CPM) from Drake University, her Certificate of Public Treasury Management from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, and her MBA from the University of Iowa.
