DES MOINES, IOWA (November 8, 2024) — The Libertarian Party of Iowa (LPIA) is proud to announce its endorsement of Representative Thomas Massie for Secretary of Agriculture.

His commitment to individual liberty, sustainable farming practices, and the protection of small American farms makes him the ideal candidate for this position.

Massie’s record in Congress speaks for itself as a tireless advocate for the rights of small farmers. He has championed such legislation as the PRIME Act (Processing Revival and Interstate Meat Exemption Act), which aims to reduce federal barriers for local farmers and processors, allowing them to sell meat directly to consumers, free from the heavy hand of restrictive USDA regulation.

This would be a game-changer for Iowa families; providing more local food choices, fostering rural economic growth, creating local jobs, and empowering independent farmers across Iowa.

Rep Massie has consistently advocated for American farmers, particularly those from small, independent operations, whose voices are often drowned out by large agricultural interests and lobbyists.

His commitment to transparency and accountability has led him to challenge controversial programs like the USDA’s Checkoff system.

This program mandates high fees, disproportionately affecting Iowa’s small and independent farmers, and often benefits larger corporations at the expense of smaller competitors. By opposing the Checkoff program, Rep Massie has demonstrated his support for family farms — a stance that resonates deeply with Iowans who believe in fair, competitive markets.

"Rep Massie’s vision for American agriculture aligns perfectly with the principles Iowans hold dear," said Jules Cutler, Chair of the LPIA. "By prioritizing the rights of small farmers and pushing back against government overreach, Massie exemplifies the kind of leadership needed to restore true agricultural freedom."

During his campaign, President-Elect Donald Trump recognized the growing influence of libertarian principles, shaping his “unity” strategy. At the Libertarian National Convention in Washington DC, he expressed his commitment to bringing liberty-minded voices into his administration.

While appointing Rep Thomas Massie as Secretary of Agriculture may not directly fulfill the pledge to appoint a formal Libertarian, it would nonetheless be a powerful choice. Massie’s unwavering commitment to limited government, free markets, and agricultural independence reflects the values that resonate deeply with both libertarians and freedom-loving Americans.

The Libertarian Party of Iowa remains steadfast in its mission to defend liberty and ensure that government works for the people, not against them. With Mr Massie at the helm of the USDA, we believe American agriculture can thrive once again, free from unnecessary federal intervention.

The Libertarian Party of Iowa is committed to America’s heritage of freedom: individual liberty and personal responsibility, a free-market economy of abundance and prosperity, a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade. Find out more at lpia.org/.
