EAST MOLINE, ILLINOIS (January 13, 2026) — Living Lands and Waters (LL&W) is thrilled to announce the arrival of its new floating classroom barge, the Mississippi River Institute (MRI), at Beacon Harbor for the second time. From January 29 through late June, this innovative educational space will host a variety of free workshops and events designed to engage young adults and the local community, connecting them to economic opportunities on the Mississippi River.
Through its free workforce development workshops, young adults can explore career pathways tied to the Mississippi River, including roles in STEM fields, navigation, and conservation. These hands-on sessions, which include industry-professional guest speakers, aim to unlock “2,300 miles of opportunity,” connecting participants with the river’s economic and ecological potential.
In addition to the workshops, the floating classroom is available as a unique venue for private meetings, corporate events, and community gatherings. With panoramic views of the Mississippi River, this adaptable space inspires collaboration and creativity.
The public is invited to attend an “open house” on Saturday, February 7, 10AM-12PM, where tours of the facility will be available.
