DAVENPORT, IOWA (May 2, 2023) — The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Quad Cities area residents to attend their annual Memories in the Making event on Friday, May 19, 5:30–9:30PM, at the Figge Art Museum. Paintings created by locals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia in the Memories in the Making Art Therapy program will be available to bid on in a silent and live auction. All proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association to support Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
The Memories in the Making Art Therapy program helps those living with the disease who have lost the ability to use words express their thoughts and emotions and share memories through paintings with watercolors. It’s a way to improve the quality of life for people living with the disease and bring their stories and feelings to light.
Don is one of the participants in the program at Friendship Manor, and his painting will be featured in the live auction. Don painted a football from his memories of playing football for the University of Illinois and going to the Rose Bowl in 1952. His family said that when he tosses the football, he still instinctively positions his fingers on the laces. When he’s holding a football his eyes light up, he's young again, and he always gives a quick glance to Mary, his wife of seventy years, to see that she's still watching.
Janice is a resident at Senior Star at Elmore Place, and she has always had a passion for painting. She is from Luton, England, and her painting is of flowers in Luton. She came up with this beautiful painting that was inspired by asking her to "make a wish." Janice wishes to hold on to the memories of her home country as long as she is able to.
Tickets for the Memories in the Making event are available at QCMemories23.givesmart.com, and more information about the Alzheimer’s Association can be found at alz.org/iowa.
