Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after President Trump released his budget for FY2018.
“The budget put forth today is a slap in the face to hardworking families across Iowa. It cuts investments in programs that have a proven record of creating jobs and growing the economy, disinvests in education, cuts important funding for rebuilding our infrastructure, eliminates vital workforce training programs, does away with loans to ensure Iowans have access to clean water, and turns off assistance to low income families to help manage heating and energy costs.
“This proposed budget fails to reflect the priorities of Iowans. If enacted, this budget would cut more than one trillion dollars from programs affecting seniors, children and those less fortunate while giving a tax break to billionaires and corporations. It destroys investments in good paying jobs by slashing funds for employment-creating programs such as investments in infrastructure, innovation and clean energy. On top of that, this budget hollows out funding important to rural communities. It slashes the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget by 21 percent. The budget also eliminates the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Community Development Block Grants and Community Service Block Grants that assist communities of all sizes.
“This budget is a direct attack on Iowa’s hardworking families, rural communities and small businesses, all while giving more and more to those who are wealthy and well. We need a budget that works for all Americans, not just millionaires, billionaires and corporations.”
