Contest offers students a chance to win $1,000

DES MOINES, IOWA (March 6, 2017) – Iowa students have until March 24 to enter the Money Smart Kid essay contest and compete for the chance to win $1,000 to help boost their college savings. The statewide essay contest is sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association.

To participate, students must be in grades seven through eleven. Eligible students can enter the contest by writing an essay of 400 words or fewer, answering the question: “Do you think there is a connection between financial health and physical health? Please explain your answer. What can you do to become more financially healthy?”

The student with the winning essay will be selected as Iowa’s Money Smart Kid for 2017 and receive $1,000 towards his or her college savings. The other two finalist will receive $500 towards college savings, all funded by the Iowa Bankers Association.

A previous essay winner had this to say about the contest. “The contest really got me thinking more about preparing for college and saving for fun as well,” she said: “I also think the experiences writing the essay, interviewing as a finalist and public speaking were great preparation for my future.”
The Money Smart Kid serves as an ambassador during Money Smart Week Iowa, which will be April 22-29, 2017.

Essays are due March 24. To download an essay application form and instructions, visit http://www.moneysmartweek.org/kids_competition.
