DES MOINES, IOWA (May 6, 2025) — Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11, and it still reigns as the busiest restaurant day of the year. With demand rising for both dine-in and takeout, now is the time to finalize plans.

According to data from the National Restaurant Association, nearly half of Americans plan to celebrate Mother’s Day using restaurants, with 34% dining out and another 12% ordering takeout or delivery. In Iowa and across the country, restaurants are preparing for high traffic throughout the day.

“Mother’s Day consistently brings the biggest crowds of the year,” said Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Restaurant Association. “No matter what type of eatery mom enjoys—from a sandwich shop to a fine dining restaurant —it’s the shared experience that matters. Don’t just celebrate mom — celebrate with her — and support one or more of her favorite restaurants along the way.”

When asked why restaurants are part of their celebration plans, consumers gave clear reasons:

• 56% want to pamper the mother figures in their lives — or themselves.

• 48% want to create a special memory with family and friends.

• 39% want to avoid cooking and cleanup.

OpenTable research also shows that 44% of moms say having someone else take the lead on planning is part of what makes the day most special.

“Restaurants are still navigating recovery from the pandemic, which makes occasions like Mother’s Day especially important,” said Dunker. “It’s a key moment for the industry, as well as a meaningful opportunity for families to step away from the kitchen and spend time together — whether that means dining in or taking a favorite meal to go.”
