Des Moines, IA - State Senator Nate Boulton, Democratic candidate for governor, made the following statement in reaction to the tax proposal release by Governor Reynolds and the Republicans.

“The proposed Republican tax plan is a nightmare for working Iowa families,” said Boulton. “Instead of addressing the out-of-control tax credits and giveaways that Republicans have been handing out to corporations, they chose to slash income taxes for the wealthiest in our state and lowered the tax rates for the highest corporate tax bracket. In an effort to make up lost revenue from their tax cuts and continued tax credits, the Republican tax plan expanded the sales tax base, which will cost poor and middle class families even more of their hard-earned dollars as they spend money to sustain their families. Republicans went even further to leave Iowa’s budget at the mercy of the federal tax plan.”

“As we prepare $35 million in mid-year budget cuts this legislative session, I cannot believe Republicans are moving forward with a tax plan benefiting Iowa’s wealthiest individuals and corporations and sacrificing more resources for our schools, health care services, and other essential programs we need for maintaining safe and secure communities,” Said Boulton. “Governor Reynolds and the Republicans need to deliver on their promises to support the middle class and grow wages, and this tax scheme is not the way to do it.”
