Rock Island, IL: Teens have long been able to get their game on with video and board gaming programs at the Rock Island Library, and now it's game on for adults and families as well. Starting in August, the library will start monthly board game nights for families on the first Tuesday of each month and retro gaming for adults on the second Thursday, both at the Downtown Library.
For the Board Game nights, the library will offer two new games each month, allowing players to learn about and try new games. Titles range from modern games, such as King of Tokyo, Pandemic, Codenames, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and Dominion, to classic options. No experience is necessary. The first board game night is Tuesday, August 1, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on the 1st floor of the Downtown Library. The series is offered again Sept. 5.
The library's new Retro Gamers Club revisits the past with a focus on "retro video gaming," games from the 1980s and 90s. Intended for adults, the new monthly series allows players to learn about video game history, play some nostalgic video games, talk with other gamers, and even swap and trade games, consoles, and accessories with each other. The first Retro Gamers Club is Thursday, August 10, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in the community room of the Downtown Library. The second program is Sept. 14.
Another new series will helps adults "up their game" regarding technology in general. The library is offering monthly Technology Open Labs at all locations to help with a variety of questions, from using personal devices to setting up or using email, internet, and social media sites. The drop-in times are from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm on the second Friday of the month at Downtown (Aug. 11), the third Friday at 30/31 (Aug. 18) and the fourth Friday at Southwest (Aug. 25.) No registration is necessary. Help is available on a first-come, first served basis.
All of the above events are free and open to the public. Rock Island Library locations are: Downtown Library, 401 19th Street; 30/31 Library, 3059 30th Street, and Southwest Library, 9010 Ridgewood Road.
