DES MOINES, IOWA (June 30, 2025) — A new report published over the weekend by the Trump administration’s Bureau of Economic Analysis found that Iowa’s real gross domestic product shrank at the worst rate in the nation in the first quarter, declining by 6.1 percent.

Candidate for governor Rob Sand issued the following statement on the report’s findings:

“Under current leadership, Iowa continues to break all the wrong records. Whether it’s the worst economic development, personal income growth, or now GDP, the insiders in Des Moines are dragging Iowa’s economy further into the ditch and leaving Iowa families behind in the process — all as costs and cancer rates continue to rise. As Iowa continues to rack up some of the worst ratings, one thing is clear: the current path we’re on is not working. Iowa needs a leader who will get to work reversing the damage ten years of one-party control has caused our state.”

In addition to tying for the worst GDP decline in the country, a new report earlier this month from WalletHub found that Iowa has the worst economy in the nation. The Trump administration found that Iowa is ranked 49th in the nation for economic growth, and 48th for personal income growth. Iowa also has the fastest-growing rates for cancer in the country.
