Pork-Almighty Wins 2017 People's Choice Best New Food Award

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2017) (readMedia)-- Pork-Almighty a new food from Steer 'N' Stein took top honors in the 2017 People's Choice Best New Food Contest. Iowa's Pork Leg from Campbell's Concessions and Mig's Applewood Smoked Chicken Wrap from G Mig's were stiff competitors.

Lovingly called the tower of pork power, the Pork-Almighty contains crispy beer battered twister fries, cheese sauce, smothered smoked shredded pork, topped with sautéed onions, green peppers, Cookies BBQ sauce and shredded cheese. A soft drink is included in the unique container meant to carry both for just $12.

The two other foods vying for the 2017 title remain available throughout the Fair at their respective locations. Iowa's Pork Leg is an Iowa raised pork shank, smoked to perfection in a sweet Caribbean seasoning. Mig's Applewood Smoked Chicken Wrap contains diced smoked chicken tossed with a creamy bacon dressing, celery and chopped herbs.

Sprout Acts Advance to Semi-Finals in State Fair Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2017) (readMedia)-- Six talented Sprout division acts (ages 2-12) have advanced to the semi-final round in Bill Riley's 58th annual Iowa State Fair Talent Search. Each act will perform again on Thursday, August 17, Friday, August 18 or Saturday, August 19.

The Bill Riley Talent Search has put Iowa's young talent on stages across the state each summer since 1960. Nearly 100 local qualifying competitions are held across the state and winners advance to the State Fair competition, where there are seven days of preliminary competition for Sprouts (ages 2-12) and Seniors (ages 13-21), followed by the semi-finals and, ultimately, the selection of one Senior Champion. The Sprouts do not compete beyond the semi-finals, but perform in the Championship Show as Sprout Champions set for Sunday, August 20 at 1:30 p.m. on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi and media sponsor CW Iowa 23.

Each of the six Sprout Champions will receive a prize of $250 after the Championship Show. More than $17,000 will be awarded to the Senior and Sprout divisions combined. This year's contest is sponsored by Hy-Vee.

Minnesota Man Claims Top Honors at Iowa State Fair Columbia Sheep Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2017) (readMedia)-- Sheep breeders from three states brought their best animals to the Columbia Sheep show, judged Thursday, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

Isaiah Bauck of New York Mills, Minn. took top honors at the Columbia Sheep show. Bauck claimed the Champion and Reserve Champion Ram titles, Champion Ewe title, as well as first place in the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.

Thiesen Family Columbias of Alden received Reserve Champion Ewe honors and placed second in the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.

Travaille Family Columbias of Sibley placed third in the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.
