IOWA CITY, IOWA (November 12, 2019) — NextGen Iowa will host a Mock Caucus this week at Kirkwood Community College. Young voters will be more important than ever in the 2020 election, and NextGen Iowa is recognizing that by educating, engaging, and mobilizing young people across the state at mock caucuses. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Julían Castro have all won past mock caucuses; now the students at Kirkwood Community College have a chance to support their preferred candidates. This will be the eighth mock caucus hosted in the state by NextGen, but it will be the first to offer young caucusgoers a sought-after item: The Popeye's chicken sandwich. The sandwiches have received a lot of attention since their release, and NextGen Iowa will be offering them to attendees at the Mock Caucus — just one more way the organization is working to reach young voters. In 2018, NextGen Iowa registered over 14,243 young voters, collected over 21,668 pledges to vote, and knocked on 63,270 doors. Young Iowans were essential to achieving victories across the state, including electing one of the youngest representatives to the House. This year, NextGen Iowa remains dedicated to organizing young people in their communities and on college campuses around elections by fighting to expand access to the ballot box and advocating for progressive change. The staff at NextGen Iowa looks forward to seeing the results of this mock caucus and turn out more voters for the 2020 Iowa Caucus and the general election.
